Key Points

  • BYD delivered a record 18,881 vehicles in Australia in June 2026, its best month ever and enough to rank second nationally among almost 60 brands for the third consecutive month.
  • Tesla sold a record 8,670 EVs in June, and the Model Y was Australia's best-selling car outright for the second month running, with 8,072 deliveries.
  • BYD's June result lifted its first half 2026 total to 52,335 vehicles, while DENZA passed 2,419 total deliveries since launching in Australia in February.

BYD delivered 18,881 vehicles in Australia in June 2026, the brand's best month on record. The result caps a three month run of 34,794 deliveries across April, May and June, and takes BYD's first half 2026 total to 52,335 vehicles. Tesla also posted a record month, selling 8,670 EVs according to Electric Vehicle Council data, with the Model Y alone accounting for 8,072 of those, enough to make it Australia's best-selling car outright for the second consecutive month.

Both results point to a record month for electric vehicle sales in Australia, though the exact national EV market share will not be confirmed until next week. The Federated Chamber of Automotive Industries, which compiles the official VFACTS data, delayed release of its full monthly figures without explanation. Early estimates put the EV share of new car sales as high as 30%, up from a record 20% in May.

BYD's Record June

BYD said the June result was the culmination of a promise made in early April, when it told customers it would deliver vehicles in record time after orders more than doubled amid rising fuel prices. BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the result was backed by full factory support and increased production, including a special delivery of almost 5,000 additional BYD and DENZA vehicles carried on a BYD owned vessel, the BYD ZHENGZHOU.

“We asked our customers to back us in, and they did, and we delivered,” Collins said.

BYD dealers extended trading hours to fit deliveries in, including evenings and weekends, and some delivery centres ran food vans to keep customers comfortable during pickup. BYD said the June total is unlikely to be repeated for some time.

June also marked BYD's third consecutive month ranking second nationally among almost 60 brands selling passenger and light commercial vehicles in Australia, a field that includes petrol, diesel and hybrid competitors as well as EVs.

Fully Electric Sales and Tesla's June

BYD's June total of 18,881 includes both fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids such as the Shark 6 and Sealion 6. Counting fully electric models only, BYD sold 10,371 EVs in June, led by the Sealion 7 with 4,730, the Atto 2 with 2,482, the Atto 1 with 871, the Seal with 769, the Atto 3 with 677 and the Dolphin with 645.

Tesla's 8,670 EVs in June were almost entirely made up of the Model Y, which recorded 8,072 sales and was Australia's best selling car of any type for a second consecutive month, ahead of every other vehicle nameplate sold in the country including the Ford Ranger. That places the Model Y ahead of every individual BYD model in June, even though BYD outsold Tesla overall once its wider model range and plug in hybrids are counted.

DENZA, BYD's luxury and off road brand, delivered close to 1,800 vehicles in the second quarter, bringing its total to 2,419 since launching in Australia in February 2026.

BYD Cracks Australia's Top 10 Overall, Model Y Top-Seller

The individual model rankings show how far BYD's range has penetrated the broader new car market, not just the EV segment. Three BYD models placed in Australia's top 10 best selling vehicles overall in June, against traditional heavyweights like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Toyota RAV4. The Tesla Model Y topped car sales for the second month in a row with a record 8072 sales.

The Sealion 7 was Australia's third best selling vehicle of any kind in June, behind only the Tesla Model Y and Ford Ranger, and ahead of the Toyota Hilux on volume despite Hilux outselling it in the year prior. The Shark 6 ute placed sixth and the Atto 2 placed ninth in its first month on sales. BYD's three entries were more than any other single brand managed, with Toyota the next closest on two.

State by State: BYD and Tesla Performance

BYD topped the brand market in five of Australia's eight states and territories in June: Victoria (14.4%), Queensland (13.8%), Western Australia (14.3%), Tasmania (13.7%) and the ACT (19.0%). Toyota led in New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Tesla's strongest result was in the ACT, where it placed second overall with 15.5% share, well ahead of its 6.2% national average.

The ACT recorded Australia's most advanced EV market by a wide margin. EV share of new car sales in the territory reached 43.12% in June, and EVs now make up 5% of the ACT's total passenger vehicle fleet.

Cost of Living and Fuel Prices Driving Demand

Both companies pointed to the same underlying driver: rising fuel prices squeezing household budgets. BYD said orders had more than doubled since early April as cost of living pressure intensified. The broader surge in EV interest to global fuel price rises following conflict in the Middle East, with fuel supply disruption continuing to act as a key factor behind the shift to electric vehicles.
