Key Points

  • BYD has removed the entry-level Seal Dynamic from its Australian lineup.
  • The company says demand for the base variant no longer justified keeping it on sale.
  • The Seal Premium now becomes the new entry point, starting from $52,990 before on-road costs.
  • Seal sales are still booming, rising 92 per cent during the first five months of 2026.
  • The move comes as BYD continues rapid growth in Australia and expands its EV and PHEV range.

BYD has quietly removed the most affordable version of its Seal electric sedan from Australian showrooms, despite the brand recording some of its strongest sales growth yet.

The Chinese EV giant has discontinued the Seal Dynamic, reducing the local lineup from three variants to two. The decision leaves the better-equipped Seal Premium as the new entry point into the range, increasing the starting price of the Seal lineup but simplifying the model offering.

The move comes during a period of remarkable momentum for BYD in Australia. Electric vehicles accounted for nearly one in five new vehicle sales nationally last month, while BYD has emerged as one of the country's fastest-growing automotive brands.

Why did BYD drop the Seal Dynamic?

While the Seal Dynamic offered the lowest purchase price in the range, BYD says customer demand simply wasn't strong enough to justify its continued presence.

A spokesperson for BYD Australia confirmed the Dynamic was the slowest-selling variant in the lineup.

According to the company, customer buying patterns showed stronger demand for higher-specification models equipped with larger batteries, longer driving range and improved performance. As a result, BYD opted to streamline the range and focus on the variants buyers were choosing most often.

The company also stressed that the decision was unrelated to the arrival of the cheaper Seal 6 plug-in hybrid sedan, which launched earlier this year and has quickly become one of Australia's most affordable electrified family cars.

Despite losing its entry-level model, Seal sales remain strong. Deliveries have increased by 92 per cent during the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period last year.

How It Compares To The Remaining Variants

Although it sat at the bottom of the lineup, the Seal Dynamic still offered respectable performance and driving range for its price.

Powered by a rear-mounted 150kW electric motor and a 61.44kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, it delivered a WLTP driving range of 460km and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds.

Buyers willing to spend more can access significantly higher outputs and greater range through the Premium and Performance variants.

The Premium now serves as the entry model, offering an additional 110km of claimed driving range and significantly stronger performance. At the top of the range, the dual-motor Performance variant delivers supercar-like acceleration with a claimed 3.8-second sprint to 100km/h.

The Seal's Changing Role

When the Seal launched in Australia in 2023, it quickly became one of BYD's most important models. In 2024 it was the company's best-selling vehicle locally, outperforming both the Atto 3 SUV and the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid.

That position has changed considerably over the past year.

The Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute has become BYD's volume leader, while newer products such as the Sealion 7 electric SUV have attracted growing buyer interest. At the same time, the launch of the Seal 6 sedan and wagon has given Australian customers more affordable electrified alternatives.

The Seal 6 sedan starts from $34,990 before on-road costs, making it Australia's cheapest plug-in hybrid sedan and undercutting the Toyota Camry by around $5,000. The recently introduced Seal 6 wagon also enters the market at $39,990 before on-road costs, substantially cheaper than rival plug-in hybrid wagons such as the Skoda Superb iV Wagon.

What This Means For Australia

The removal of the Seal Dynamic highlights an interesting shift in Australia's EV market. Rather than chasing the lowest possible purchase price, many buyers are increasingly prioritising longer range, stronger performance and higher equipment levels.

For BYD, the decision reflects confidence that Australian consumers are willing to spend more for a better-equipped EV. It also shows how quickly the company's local portfolio is evolving. With electric SUVs, plug-in hybrid SUVs, sedans, wagons and utes now available, BYD no longer relies on a single model to drive growth.

The broader picture remains positive for the brand. BYD has already climbed to second place in Australia's overall sales rankings in both April and May 2026, trailing only Toyota. Aided by increased vehicle shipments and an expanding model lineup, the company is continuing to strengthen its position as one of Australia's biggest EV success stories.

For buyers, the end of the Seal Dynamic means there is one less affordable long-range electric sedan on the market. However, BYD appears confident that demand for the higher-spec Premium and Performance variants will more than compensate as Australia's EV market continues to mature.
