BYD Sealion 6 Becomes Australia’s Most Affordable PHEV with Price Cuts for 2025

The BYD Sealion 6 has officially become Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV (PHEV), undercutting the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, following significant price reductions for its 2025 model year (MY25) lineup.

As part of these changes, BYD has introduced a new entry-level Essential variant, offering fewer features at a lower price point - $42,990 before on-road costs. The base Dynamic model has been discontinued, after its price was slashed by $3000 in January 2025, bringing it down to $45,990 before on-road costs.

For MY25, BYD now only lists the Essential and unchanged Premium variants in its lineup:

  • Essential$42,990 before on-road costs. The most affordable version, with specifications yet to be detailed.
  • Premium – The range-topping version, priced at $52,990 before on-road costs, remains unchanged apart from the loss of the Azure Blue paint option.

Powertrains and Range

The BYD Sealion 6 is powered by BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid technology, allowing it to operate in three different modes: pure EV, HEV series mode, and HEV parallel mode.

Essential

Expected to share the same powertrain as the previous Dynamic model:

  • Front-mounted motor: 145kW/300Nm
  • 1.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Xiaoyun’ petrol engine: 72kW/122Nm
  • Combined output: 160kW/300Nm
  • Electric range: 92km (NEDC)

Premium

Retains the dual-motor and turbocharged setup:

  • Front motor: 150kW/300Nm
  • Rear motor: 120kW/250Nm
  • Turbocharged 1.5-litre ‘Xiaoyun’ petrol engine
  • Combined output: 238kW/550Nm
  • Electric range: 81km (NEDC)

Competing in the Mid-Size SUV Market

The BYD Sealion 6 is a mid-size SUV positioned to compete with key hybrid and plug-in hybrid rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Tesla Model Y. With aggressive pricing and strong electric range, it remains one of the most affordable PHEV models available in Australia.

A suspension update is on the horizon for the BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid family SUV in Australia. David Smitherman, CEO of BYD distributor EVDirect, informed enthusiasts that the 2025 model will feature modifications to its suspension system compared to the 2024 models, aiming to provide a "firmer" driving experience.

A Rising Star in the Australian Market

Despite launching in mid-2024, the BYD Sealion 6 quickly became Australia’s top-selling PHEV, with 6198 units sold, narrowly outselling the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (6126 units).

With the introduction of the Essential variant and continued competitive pricing, the BYD Sealion 6 is set to strengthen its position as a leader in Australia’s growing plug-in hybrid market.

How does BYD's DM-i technology work?

The BYD Sealion 6's drivetrain is underpinned by BYD's proprietary DM-i (Dual Motor Intelligence).

The DMi-i is a variation of a PHEV technology which can operate in three power supply modes:

  • Pure EV Mode - In Pure EV Mode, the wheels are 100% driven by the electric motor for an all-electric drive experience, with the engine on standby.
  • HEV Series Mode - When the battery falls below a set state-of-charge, the engine acts as a generator charging the battery, the wheels are driven by the electric motor, making HEV mode the ideal companion for extending range.
  • HEV Parallel Mode - The wheels are driven by both the electric motor and the engine.

BYD Sealion 6 Size and Dimensions

BYD Sealion 6 measures 4775mm in length, 1,890mm in width and 1,670mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,765mm.

BYD Sealion 6 is slightly larger than Toyota RAV4, and very similarly sized to Mitsubishi Outlander.

Even though this is a mid size SUV, it has a turning circle of just 11 metres which is quite good for this class of vehicle.

Boot capacity is generous at around 574 litres. There is no frunk as this is a plug-in hybrid with an internal combustion engine.

Kerb weight sits between 1,940kg with the Dynamic, and around 2,100kg for the Premium model. By comparison the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV weighs between 2,020 to 2,145kg.

BYD Sealion 6 Warranty and Servicing

BYD Sealion 6 crash during safety test

The BYD Sealion 6 is covered by a six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty.

However, shorter specific warranties will likely apply to individual components, such as the touchscreen system, suspension, and air-conditioning filters.

Servicing every 12 months/20,000km, with a free three-month/5000km initial service also needed. Unlike the Atto 3 small SUV, a "short mileage" servicing schedule is not available for owners who drive less than the 20,000km/year requirement. This may change as more information is released.

Roadside assistance is included for 12 months only.

BYD Australia recommends servicing their electric cars can be serviced at certified service centres run by Eagers Automotive or select Mycar Tyre and Auto mechanics locations (listed here).
