Key Points

  • BYD Sealion 6 priced from $48,990
  • Up to 92km electric driving range, 1,100km in hybrid mode
  • Rivals Mitshubishi Outlander PHEV, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The BYD Sealion 6, a plug-in hybrid SUV (PHEV), has arrived in Australia aiming to take on the popular Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Priced from $48,990 to $52,990 before on-road costs, the Sealion 6 provides up to 92km of claimed NEDC electric range and up to 1100km range in hybrid mode. It is underpinned by BYD's proprietary DM-i technology which enables it to operate in three modes: pure EV, HEV series mode and HEV parallel.

There are two variants to choose from, with a single battery size and two drivetrain configurations:

  • Dynamic - front-mounted 145kW/300Nm motor and 72kW/122Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Xiaoyun’ petrol engine. Combined output of 160kW/300Nm and an electric range of 92km.
  • Premium - dual motor (150kW/300Nm front and 120kW/250Nm rear) and turbo-petrol 1.5-litre ‘Xiaoyun’ engine. Combined output of 238kW/550Nm and an electric range of 81km.

The Sealion 6 is a mid-size SUV which could compete with popular class leaders across different power trains: Tesla Model Y, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It undercuts all three on price, making it once of the most affordable PHEV models available.

BYD Sealion 6 Key Specs: Range, Charging and Performance

The BYD Sealion 6 is offered in two variants differentiated by the powertrains.

The Sealion 6 comes in two variants: Dynamic and Premium. They share an 18.3kWh BYD Blade battery (LFP chemistry) which is capable of being charged at up to 7kW AC and 18kW DC. The ability to charge using a DC fast charger is not a common feature of PHEVs.

Dynamic

  • The Dynamic offers a 1.5-litre natural aspirated petrol engine and a single electric motor for front-wheel drive, with a combined output of 160kW/300Nm.
  • Offers up to 92km of range based on the NEDC standard
  • Combined fuel consumption is claimed to be 1.1L/100km (ADR).
  • Acceleration for the Dynamic is a claimed 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds.

Premium

  • Upgrading to the Premium adds a turbocharger to the 1.5-litre engine, and another electric motor to the rear axles for all-wheel drive, and increased combined power output of 238kW/550Nm.
  • Due to the additional weight of the extra motors, the Premium's range is lower than the Dynamic at 81km.
  • Combined fuel consumption is claimed to be 1.3L/100km (ADR).
  • The Premium can accelerate from 0–100km/h in a rapid 5.9 seconds.

How does BYD's DM-i technology work?

The BYD Sealion 6's drivetrain is underpinned by BYD's proprietary DM-i (Dual Motor Intelligence).

The DMi-i is a variation of a PHEV technology which can operate in three power supply modes:

  • Pure EV Mode - In Pure EV Mode, the wheels are 100% driven by the electric motor for an all-electric drive experience, with the engine on standby.
  • HEV Series Mode - When the battery falls below a set state-of-charge, the engine acts as a generator charging the battery, the wheels are driven by the electric motor, making HEV mode the ideal companion for extending range.
  • HEV Parallel Mode - The wheels are driven by both the electric motor and the engine.

BYD Sealion 6 Size and Dimensions

BYD Sealion 6 measures 4775mm in length, 1,890mm in width and 1,670mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,765mm.

BYD Sealion 6 Warranty and Servicing

BYD Sealion 6 crash during safety test

The BYD Sealion 6 is covered by a six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty.

However, shorter specific warranties will likely apply to individual components, such as the touchscreen system, suspension, and air-conditioning filters.

Servicing every 12 months/20,000km, with a free three-month/5000km initial service also needed. Unlike the Atto 3 small SUV, a "short mileage" servicing schedule is not available for owners who drive less than the 20,000km/year requirement. This may change as more information is released.

Roadside assistance is included for 12 months only.

BYD Australia recommends servicing their electric cars can be serviced at certified service centres run by Eagers Automotive or select Mycar Tyre and Auto mechanics locations (listed here).
