  • Dolphin EV priced from $29,990 plus ORC
  • Up to 427km driving range, two Blade Battery sizes
  • Rivals MG 4, GWM Ora, Nissan Leaf

The 2025 BYD Dolphin electric hatch has launched with a new sub $30,000 price tag making it the most affordable EV available.

Priced from $29,990 to $36,990 before on-road costs, the Dolphin EV provides between 340km to 427km of claimed WLTP driving range depending on the variant.

The 2025 model line-up sees BYD launch a new "Essential" version of its Dolphin EV at a significantly reduced price of $29,990 plus on-road costs. It is now officially Australia's cheapest electric car. The BYD Dolphin range is now priced as follows:

TrimPrice (plus ORC)
Essential$29,990
Premium$36,990

The Dolphin electric hatch matches the price of traditional petrol-engined small cars, including the base-spec Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport ($29,270), Mazda 3 ($31,190), and Hyundai i30 Hatch ($29,000).

Additionally, the Dolphin boasts a richer standard feature set compared to the budget-friendly MG4 electric hatch ($34,990 drive-away) and undercuts the BYD Atto 3 SUV by $10,000.

Key features include advanced safety systems like Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Predictive Collision Warning. The Premium trim adds luxuries like a panoramic glass roof, rain-sensing wipers, and a heat pump. Both trims support fast charging with CCS2 ports, with the Premium allowing 80 kW DC charging for quick top-ups.

The BYD Dolphin directly rivals the growing list of electric hatches, including the MG4 and GWM Ora, in addition to the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV small electric SUVs. More expensive electric small car alternatives include the Nissan Leaf, Cupra Born, and Volvo EX30.

2025 BYD Dolphin Specs: Range, Charging and Size

The 2025 BYD Dolphin is available in two drivetrain variants, distinguished by their battery capacities and powertrains, both adopting BYD's innovative Blade Battery technology.

These thin lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells are designed for enhanced safety, durability, and longevity.

The Essential variant offers a WLTP-certified range of 340 km, powered by a single front-mounted electric motor that produces 70 kW and 180 Nm, allowing for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 12.3 seconds. It supports a maximum DC charging rate of 60 kW, making it a practical choice for urban commutes.

Upgrading to the Premium variant boosts the range to 427 km, courtesy of a larger 60.48 kWh battery pack. This version features a more powerful motor delivering 150 kW and 310 Nm, enabling a much quicker 0-100 km/h time of 7 seconds. Additionally, it supports faster DC charging at 80 kW, providing greater convenience for longer journeys.

Both variants feature front-wheel drive and offer advanced electric vehicle technology while maintaining affordability and efficiency, making them ideal choices for both city driving and extended road trips.
