Tesla has officially rolled out the Model Y L, a new six-seat version of its best-selling SUV, across showrooms in China. Customers can now visit Tesla stores for consultations and to view the vehicle, although test drive units are not yet available. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in September 2025.

The Model Y L launches at a starting price of 339,000 yuan (approx. AU$72,700) and is expected to target families in China’s highly competitive electric SUV market.

Focus on Cabin Space

Tesla has stretched the Model Y’s wheelbase by 150 mm and increased its height by 44 mm to create additional interior space. The second-row features two independent captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, and pop-up armrests. The seats are adjustable, giving passengers more flexibility and legroom.

However, the third row has drawn criticism. Despite providing extra seating, the design introduces compromises:

  • Headroom is tight, particularly for passengers around 170 cm tall, with only minimal clearance before touching the roofline.
  • A 100 mm central hump on the floor makes entry and exit less convenient.
  • The seats themselves were described as “bench-like,” offering limited thigh support and making them more suited for short trips or emergency use.
  • The rear window sits very close to the head, raising concerns about sun exposure and passenger comfort on hot days.
Third-Row AssessmentFindings
LegroomSufficient for average-height adults, but limited overall space
HeadroomRestricted due to coupe-style roof
Seat SupportMinimal thigh support, “bench-like” feel
ComfortBest for occasional use, not long trips
Luggage Space (all rows up)Small – around 3 backpacks + underfloor storage + 116L front trunk

Practicality and Design Trade-Offs

While the Model Y L offers a six-seat configuration, practicality remains limited when all rows are occupied. Boot space is relatively small, although Tesla has included extra underfloor storage and a front trunk.

The trade-off comes down to Tesla maintaining the coupe-SUV design of the Model Y. While it preserves the familiar styling, it also restricts cabin comfort — especially in the third row, where headroom and sun exposure could be real issues in everyday use.

Market Context

The Model Y L arrives as competition in China’s family-sized EV SUV segment intensifies. Local rivals like the Onvo L90 and Li Auto i8 offer alternative takes on practicality and cabin comfort, and Tesla’s decision to prioritise design over interior space could be a factor in how the vehicle is received.

Outlook

The Model Y L adds a new dimension to Tesla’s SUV line-up, offering more seats and extended range. However, its third row may not meet the expectations of families seeking a true six-seater alternative. For now, it positions Tesla in a new niche — one that balances style, performance, and practicality, but doesn’t fully excel in passenger comfort.
