The Tesla electric SUV is eligible for select Australian incentives, including the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for fleets and novated leases.
The Model Y is the maket leader in a competitive segment, with rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It will get even more competitive in 2025 with the recent launch of the XPENG G6 and impending launch of the BYD Sealion 7 and Zeekr 7x SUVs.

The two Model Y electric SUV variants are differentiated by the drivetrain and battery pack.
The 2025 Tesla Model Y offers distinct drivetrain configurations across its variants:
Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
Equipped with a single motor producing 220 kW, this variant utilizes a 62.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The RWD model supports DC fast charging up to 170 kW, allowing for efficient recharging sessions.
The 2025 RWD gets a slight bump in range to 466 km (+11km) and improvement in acceleration, hitting the 100km/hr mark in 5.9 seconds (-1.0 seconds).
Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
This model features a dual-motor setup, combining a 137 kW front motor and a 194 kW rear motor, totaling 331 kW of power. It is powered by a 78.4 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack, enabling DC fast charging at speeds up to 250 kW.
The RWD's LFP battery is known for its durability and allows for regular charging up to 100% without significant degradation, whereas the NMC battery in the Long Range AWD offers higher energy density, contributing to extended driving ranges.
The 2025 Long Range gets a slight bump in range to 551 km (+18 km) and improvement in acceleration, hitting the 100km/hr mark in 4.3 seconds (-0.7 seconds).

Model Y Warranty and Servicing
![Tesla Model Y in front of Model 3 in Tesla showroom Tesla Model Y in front of Model 3 in Tesla showroom](/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.sanity.io%2Fimages%2Fo5m1ex7g%2Fproduction%2F1d73a942d500b2c9786fe2cf5ded76cb27d32202-1920x960.jpg&w=1080&q=75)
The Tesla Model Y is backed by a four-year/80,000km vehicle warranty and roadside assistance with a different battery warranty depending on the drivetrain variant.
For the base Model Y RWD, it has a eight-year/160,000km battery warranty, whereas the Model Y Long Range and Performance are covered for eight-years/192,000km. Tesla promises it’ll keep at least 70 per cent of its battery health over the coverage period.
It adopts a condition-based servicing scheme, meaning the vehicle will notify the owner when its sensors detect it’s time for check-up via the mobile app.
Tesla also recommends a range of specific routine maintenance tasks, including:
- Cabin air filter – every two years
- HEPA filter – every three years
- Tyre rotation, balance and wheel alignment – every 10,000km/if the tread depth difference is 1.5mm or more
- Brake fluid test – every two years
- Air conditioning desiccant bag – replace every four years
- Cleaning and lubricating brake callipers – every 12 months/20,000km (for cars in cold weather regions only)

Zecar's Take
The 'Juniper' refresh of the 2025 Tesla Model Y brings a much needed update to a design which was starting to look dated. With an absence of drivetrain upgrades, are the price increases ($7,500 for the RWD and $3,500 for the Long Range) justified? In our opinion definitely for the Long Range, the RWD is however still up for the debate.
Despite the price increases, the Tesla Model Y remains on the best value electric SUV available in the market.
Its combination of size, charging speed and range for the price is still unmatched by its peers
The Long Range model in our opinion provides the best value of the bunch, closely followed by the Rear-Wheel Drive variant.
