Comments

BYD’s upcoming electric SUV, the Sealion 7, is set to arrive in Australia soon. New details have emerged ahead of its official launch later this month. While official pricing is yet to be confirmed, the BYD Sealion 7 will be "really competitively priced" according to EVDirect's David Smitherman and will likely start under $60,000. This means it will undercut the refreshed Tesla Model Y ($63,400), however pricing may be higher than the pre-refresh price of $55,900.$60,000.

Both models will feature BYD’s 82.56 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Blade battery, though range figures vary slightly between the two.

The AC charging speed is a notable upgrade over BYD’s previous models, which were limited to 7 kW single-phase charging. It will also feature vehicle-to-load (V2L), standard in BYD models, allowing drivers to power external devices using the car’s battery.

In terms of range, the Sealion 7 will be equipped with a single 82.5 kWh battery, expected to offer a range of up to 480 km, depending on the variant. While the range figures are respectable, they fall short of the Tesla Model Y Long Range (533 km).

Size & Cargo Space

The Sealion 7 is larger than the BYD Atto 3 and similar in size to the Tesla Model Y. Measuring 4.83 meters in length, it is longer than the Model Y but falls short of the Tesla Model Y in cargo capacity. It is likely BYD has prioritised passenger space over storage which is often the case with chinese EV designs.

How does it compare to the Tesla Model Y?

The base variants of the BYD Sealion 7 and Tesla Model Y are closely matched. The Sealion 7 has a substantially larger battery, giving it slightly more range, but at the expense of acceleration. The Model Y will charger faster due to the significantly smaller battery andhigher peak charging rate.

What's ahead for the Sealion 7?

The Sealion 7 has been spotted undergoing local testing for several months, and with an official launch just weeks away, it is one of BYD’s most anticipated models in Australia.

With pricing set to start below $60,000, the Sealion 7 could become a strong competitor in the mid-sized electric SUV segment. Official pricing details will be announced soon, but based on its specs and features, it has the potential to be BYD’s best-selling EV in Australia yet.
