What is the Model Y Juniper?

Project Juniper is the code name for the impending mid-life update of the Tesla Model Y. The Model Y Juniper will likely follow the design cues and various upgrades seen in the Model 3 Highland.

Model Y Juniper Upgrades

While details about Project Juniper remain scarce, rumours suggest it will borrow heavily from the recently updated 2024 Model 3 Highland. This could include a redesigned front end, improved handling and door operation, revisions to the steering system and control arms and improved suspension.

Inside we can expect a quieter cabin, the addition of ambient lighting, new seats, and potentially even an extended driving range.

The most controversial change however could be the elimination of stalks from the Tesla dashboard design. It will be interesting to see if Tesla removes the stalks given how much backlash its has received both from existing customers and prospective buyers.

In terms of battery and drivetrain upgrades there has been no stronger indication of upgrades. While the Model 3 Highland kept the same battery and motors, we believe the Juniper update will likely received an upgraded battery configuration. Both BYD and CATL have recently released next generation battery technology which will undoubtedly makes it way to the updated Model Y.

Model Y Juniper Release Date

The recent worldwide discounting of the Tesla Model Y would indicate an imminent release of the Model Y Juniper. There however have been no confirmed leaks or photos of the Model Y Juniper update being tested.

Elon Musk has confirmed that the Tesla Model Y Juniper update will not be released in 2024. “No Model Y ‘refresh’ is coming out this year,” said Mr Musk on his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

“I should note that Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better.”

With Musk's recent comments in mind, we believe a 2026 release date for the Model Y Juniper is likely for several reasons:

  • The Tesla Model Y was first introduced in 2020. A 2026 release is consistent with a 6 year refresh cycle for the current Model Y.
  • Tesla Model 3 was first introduced in 2017 and received an overhaul in 2024. This is a 6 year refresh cycle for the Model 3.
  • The Model Y continues to selling in strong numbers, Tesla will continue to capitalise on this until demand starts to fall off.
  • Tesla continues to release minor updates and improvements to the current Model Y to ensure it remains 'fresh'. For example the recent updates to the 2024 Model Y including: Quicksilver, black gemini, comfort suspension.

Tesla Model Y Pricing History

The Model Y has received unprecedented price reductions over the prior 12 months. The Rear-Wheel Drive (-$13,400) has received the largest reduction followed by the Long Range (-$12,400) and the Performance (-$12,400).

The aggressive price reductions of the Model Y indicate softening demand as some buyerss have elected to instead buy the updated Model 3 or are waiting for the mid-life update of the Model Y.

NOTE: Prices exclude on-road costs, mandatory $400 ordering fee, $1400 delivery charge, and the Luxury Car Tax (applicable on Performance variant only).
