Tesla Model Y New Seven Seat Option Set For A Surprise Comeback

Tesla is hinting that a seven-seat version of the Model Y could be on its way back, sparking renewed interest among families looking for more seating in an electric SUV. The option was previously available in selected markets but was quietly dropped due to low demand.

A Feature That’s Come and Gone

When the Model Y was first introduced in 2019, Tesla announced an optional third row, raising the total seat count to seven. The feature arrived in the US about a year later, priced at US$3,000, but struggled to gain popularity. Tesla also trialled the configuration in China in 2021 and briefly in Europe during 2024. However, in all three regions, orders remained low, leading Tesla to phase it out by early 2025 as it rolled out the updated Model Y.

In most reviews, the third row was described as being suitable only for small children due to limited space, which likely contributed to the low take-up. When the refreshed Model Y launched in January 2025, the seven-seat configuration was no longer listed.

A Hint in Tesla’s Latest Marketing

Now, Tesla is once again drawing attention to the possibility of a seven-seat Model Y. In a recent marketing email sent to potential buyers, the company described the new Model Y as offering “long range, seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear.”

While the message doesn’t confirm the return of the option, it suggests the feature could soon be added back—though as of now, it doesn’t appear on Tesla’s online configurator.

Updates May Improve Comfort, But Only Slightly

The redesigned Model Y has brought updates to the second-row seating and boot layout, which could help improve third-row space. However, with the vehicle’s exterior dimensions unchanged, any improvements are likely to be modest. It remains to be seen whether the third row will now offer more practical seating for older children or adults.

Tesla has not released figures showing how many buyers chose the seven-seat option in the past. However, based on previous market responses, the company appears cautious about its return.

Expected Rollout Later in 2025

Tesla has indicated that the seven-seat version may become available again in Europe and China later in 2025. There’s been no formal word on whether this configuration will return to other markets, including Australia.

Zecar’s Take

A seven-seat electric SUV remains a niche option, but it can fill an important gap for larger families who want to go electric without moving to a full-size vehicle. While the original Model Y third row wasn’t particularly spacious, it did offer more flexibility for those needing occasional extra seats.

If Tesla has redesigned the interior well enough to improve comfort in the third row, the option could find more takers this time around. However, if space remains limited, buyers may still look toward roomier alternatives like the Kia EV9 or upcoming three-row electric models.

For now, Australian buyers will have to wait and see if Tesla decides to launch the seven-seat Model Y locally and whether the new design makes it a more appealing choice.
