Australia’s electric vehicle market is seeing a slight slowdown in 2025, but interest in new models remains strong. Data from the first half of the year shows fully electric vehicles accounted for 7.6 per cent of total new car sales, with 47,230 electric vehicles delivered from January to June. That’s down from 8 per cent over the same period in 2024, signalling a shift in consumer priorities as more hybrids and plug-in hybrids enter the market.

While overall EV sales dipped year-on-year, new electric SUVs have quickly gained traction. This includes several recently launched models that are already climbing the charts. Despite the growing competition, Tesla remains the top EV brand, although the gap is narrowing.
Leading the pack is the Tesla Model Y, still holding its title as Australia’s best-selling EV. It recorded 10,431 deliveries in the first six months of 2025, even as demand slowed earlier in the year during the transition to an updated version. Its strong performance in recent months helped cement its top spot.

Second place went to the BYD Sealion 7, a newcomer that made a strong impression with 3756 units sold since launching in February. The Tesla Model 3, once a dominant force, now sits in third, with sales down 65 per cent year-on-year to 3715 units.

Kia’s EV5 entered the race in fourth position with 2765 deliveries, proving its appeal among buyers looking for a mid-size electric SUV alternative to Tesla and BYD. MG’s 4 hatchback followed in fifth place with 2268 sales. The BYD Atto 3 rounded out the top six with 1854 deliveries, a notable drop compared to last year.
