MG is getting enter one of the most competitive corners of the electric car market, confirming plans for an all new MG 2 EV that could arrive globally as early as 2027. The news comes from MG Motor UK, which openly admitted that the huge buzz around the reborn Renault 5 has pushed MG to accelerate its own small EV strategy.

David Allison, MG Motor UK’s head of product and planning, told Autocar that a compact, affordable electric hatch is simply the next logical step. In his words, it is the part of the market that is about to take off, and MG intends to be there from the start.

The BYD Atto 1 Rival

For Australia, the MG 2 would sit directly in the firing line of BYD’s Atto 1, which goes on sale this month as the nation’s cheapest new electric vehicle at $23,990 dollars before on roads. It is also known as the Seagull in China and the Dolphin Surf in other markets, and it has already shaken up the entry level EV segment.

At the moment, the MG 4 is the cheapest electric model MG offers locally, and even that comes in at $37,990 before on-road costs. An MG 2 positioned below it would finally give the brand a proper contender in the ultra value EV space.

MG Motor Australia has not yet confirmed whether the MG 2 will be offered here, but given the explosive growth of affordable EVs in Australia, the model feels like a natural addition.

Value Focused Rather Than Simply The Cheapest

While some brands are fighting to wear the title of Australia’s lowest cost EV, MG says it is not chasing that crown. Allison told Autocar that MG is more interested in delivering strong value rather than a rock bottom sticker price. He pointed to the current MG ZS petrol SUV as an example, which offers Qashqai sized space for Juke money. The MG 2 is expected to follow a similar playbook.

Autocar also reports the MG 2 will be built on the same Modular Scalable Platform as the MG 4, hinting at decent performance, smarter packaging, and the potential for multiple variants.
