Key Points

  • BYD has confirmed a seven-seat Ti7 SUV for right-hand-drive export markets including the UK.
  • Australian trademark filings and local testing strongly point to a future Australian launch.
  • The Ti7 will offer plug-in hybrid and potentially full EV powertrains with up to 755km range.
  • Performance is strong, with AWD variants capable of 0–100km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds.
  • BYD’s rapid Australian expansion now puts it within reach of Toyota on total model count.

BYD’s upcoming Ti7 large SUV is shaping up as one of the brand’s most important new vehicles for Australia, with the company now confirming a seven-seat version for right-hand-drive markets including the UK.

That matters because the UK and Australia share the same right-hand-drive vehicle development pipeline, making an Australian launch increasingly likely.

The Ti7 will sit near the top of BYD’s growing SUV lineup and is expected to target families wanting a larger, more rugged alternative to the Sealion 8. It combines three rows of seating, plug-in hybrid power, off-road-inspired styling and performance figures that rival some sports SUVs.

Importantly, BYD Australia has already trademarked the Ti7 name locally and previously confirmed it was carrying out Australian chassis calibration work on an electrified off-road-focused SUV.

Taken together, the signs are becoming difficult to ignore.

A new flagship SUV designed for families and long-distance touring

The Ti7 is based on BYD’s Fangchengbao Titanium series in China, though export models will wear standard BYD badging instead of the Fangchengbao name.

Unlike the China-market version, which is sold only as a five-seater, the export Ti7 confirmed for the UK will feature a full seven-seat layout. That gives it a more direct focus on large-family buyers and positions it against vehicles such as the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and even some larger premium SUVs.

Dimensionally, the Ti7 is a substantial vehicle.

The China-spec model measures:

Interestingly, BYD UK quotes a total length of 5146mm, suggesting export-market versions could receive slightly revised bumpers or bodywork.

Compared with the Sealion 8 already on sale in Australia, the Ti7 is taller and more rugged in appearance, though both vehicles share a similar three-row SUV formula.

Unlike the ladder-frame Denza B5 and B8 SUVs, the Ti7 uses a more passenger-car-like unibody platform, which should help ride comfort and on-road handling.

Plug-in hybrid and EV powertrains deliver serious performance

The Ti7 was initially launched in China as a plug-in hybrid before later gaining a fully electric version.

For export markets like the UK, BYD has so far confirmed only the turbocharged 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain.

That setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 115kW and 225Nm with either one or two electric motors depending on drivetrain configuration.

The front-wheel-drive version uses a single 200kW/315Nm electric motor, while all-wheel-drive variants add a second motor producing 160kW/260Nm at the front and 200kW/360Nm at the rear.

BYD claims the AWD PHEV can sprint from 0–100km/h in just 4.8 seconds while delivering up to 127km of electric-only range on the WLTP cycle.

In China, battery choices include:

  • 26.6kWh battery pack
  • 35.6kWh battery pack

Depending on specification, CLTC electric range figures vary between 135km and 200km.

DC fast charging ranges from 54kW to 72kW depending on variant.

The fully electric Ti7, which has not yet been confirmed for Australia, takes things even further.

Rear-wheel-drive models produce 300kW and 365Nm, while all-wheel-drive versions add a 215kW front motor. BYD claims the AWD EV cuts the 0–100km/h sprint to just 4.5 seconds.

Battery options include:

  • 92kWh battery with up to 675km CLTC range
  • 105.7kWh battery with up to 755km CLTC range

The EV version also supports BYD’s ultra-fast “flash charging” technology, with a claimed 10–70 per cent charge possible in as little as five minutes.

Technology, safety and why the Ti7 is already selling strongly in China

The Ti7 arrives loaded with technology even in lower trims.

Standard equipment across the range includes leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging and a large 15.6-inch infotainment display.

Driver assistance systems are extensive too.

BYD’s DiPilot 100 safety suite includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Front and rear cross-traffic assist
  • Surround-view camera
  • Safe exit warning

Higher-spec versions gain the DiPilot 300 package, which adds LiDAR hardware for more advanced assisted-driving capability.

The Ti7 has already become one of BYD’s biggest success stories in China.

According to PC Auto data, 57,197 examples were delivered by the end of April this year. That makes it not only BYD Fangchengbao’s best-selling vehicle, but also one of the top 20 best-selling vehicles in China overall.

What this means for Australia

If the Ti7 arrives locally, it will become another major piece in BYD’s rapidly expanding Australian strategy.

BYDs line-up in Australia features 11 models, comprising wide mix of EVs and PHEVs here, including:

And the expansion is accelerating.

Recent Australian government approval documents have also revealed upcoming BYD models including:

That means BYD could soon approach Toyota’s model count in Australia — an extraordinary rise considering the brand officially launched here only a few years ago.

The Ti7 could play an important role in that growth.

Australian buyers are increasingly shifting toward larger electrified SUVs, particularly vehicles capable of family touring without relying entirely on public charging infrastructure. The Ti7’s long electric-only range, seven-seat practicality and performance credentials position it directly in one of the market’s fastest-growing segments.

It also shows how aggressively BYD is pushing into territory traditionally dominated by Toyota, Hyundai and Ford.

Last month alone, BYD delivered 7702 vehicles in Australia, making it the country’s second best-selling automotive brand behind Toyota. Year to date, it sits fifth overall and is only a few hundred units behind Ford.

The company has already stated it is targeting a top-three sales position in Australia by 2026 — and SUVs like the Ti7 could help make that ambition realistic.
