BYD is gearing up to shake the plug-in hybrid market once again, this time with a model aimed squarely at everyday Australians and fleet buyers who want lower running costs without going fully electric. The upcoming Sealion 5 arrives in early 2026 as the brand’s most affordable DM-i SUV, and BYD is positioning it as the new value benchmark in the PHEV space.
Rather than chasing luxury or niche appeal, the Sealion 5 focuses on affordability, practicality, and emissions reduction. It is expected to attract families looking to ease into new-energy motoring as well as businesses searching for a fleet solution that cuts fuel use and maintenance costs. BYD says it will outperform legacy fleet SUVs in emissions thanks to the DM-i Super Hybrid system, which prioritises electric drive as often as possible.

Hybrid Power Advantage
The Sealion 5 pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor that delivers an EV-like feel during daily use. The Essential variant produces 156 kW and includes a 12.9 kWh battery offering up to 71 km of electric range (NEDC). With a full tank and full charge, its maximum combined range reaches roughly 1,000 km.
For those who want more electric capability, the Premium variant uses a larger 18.3 kWh battery and stretches EV range to 100 km. This model also achieves the lowest fuel consumption figure in the range at 1.3 L/100 km and can travel up to 1,030 km on a full charge and tank.

Inside And On The Road
The cabin combines practicality with BYD’s trademark tech-first layout. Depending on the variant, drivers get either a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch DiLink touchscreen paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and Premium adds a 360-degree camera for easier manoeuvring.
The Sealion 5’s 463-litre boot expands to 1,410 litres when needed, making it suitable for prams, luggage, or weekend camping loads. Its 170 mm ground clearance and tight turning circle give it city-friendly flexibility, while still allowing light touring on gravel roads. Safety remains fully covered with seven airbags, advanced driver assistance systems, and a 360-degree view camera.

Australian Rollout
BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins says the Sealion 5 will support businesses trying to shift their fleets toward lower emissions and lower costs. He also notes that many Australians are searching for more affordable mobility as fuel and maintenance costs continue to climb.
Pricing for the Sealion 5 will be announced closer to launch, but expressions of interest are already open, and the SUV will be available for order from December.
