Key Points

  • The BYD V9 is a full-size electric van measuring 6,995mm long — longer than the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter.
  • Australian government certification documents list the V9 with a 150kW rear motor, 1,330kg payload, and 1,500kg braked towing capacity.
  • BYD Australia has not officially confirmed the V9, but ADR certification is a strong indicator of a planned local launch.

The BYD V9 electric van has appeared in Australian government certification documents (ADR approval), suggesting the brand is preparing to bring a full-size commercial EV to market here. BYD Australia has not made any official announcement.

The V9 was first revealed in Germany in September 2024 under the name E-Vali. It is designed primarily for the European market, where it competes with the Ford E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, and Renault Master E-Tech.

Size and dimensions

The version listed in Australian documents is the long-wheelbase variant. It measures 6,995mm long, 2,096mm wide, and 2,780mm tall, on a 4,550mm wheelbase. That makes it slightly longer than the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter at 6,967mm.

A shorter 5,995mm version is available in Europe but does not appear in the Australian certification documents. Cargo volume for the long-wheelbase variant is 17.9 cubic metres, compared to 13.9 cubic metres for the standard-length model.

Powertrain and specs

The Australian documents list a single 150kW rear-mounted motor. A dual-motor AWD configuration is available in Europe, adding a 100kW front motor, but this variant is not listed in the local certification.

The V9 is available in Europe with 80.64kWh or 126kWh LFP battery options. AC charging is rated at up to 22kW, and DC fast charging at up to 188kW. WLTP range is 220 to 250km depending on configuration. Battery capacity is not specified in the Australian certification documents.

Payload is listed at 1,330kg, with a 1,500kg braked towing capacity. Seating options of two and three seats are included in the certification.

BYD's commercial vehicle push

BYD's previous van sold in Australia was the T3, a small electric van that arrived in 2021 via Nexport and EVDirect. The V9 would represent a significant step up in size and capability.

The V9 is not the only BYD commercial vehicle to appear in Australian certification documents recently. The BYD M9 people mover was also listed this week, pointing to a broader push into the commercial and passenger transport segments.

BYD placed eighth in overall Australian car sales last year and now has 11 model lines available locally. The brand has been expanding rapidly, with the Sealion 5, Sealion 8, Seal 6, and Shark 6 all arriving in recent months.

Competition in Australia

The electric van segment in Australia is growing. The Farizon V7E is already confirmed for local deliveries from May 2026, priced as Australia's most affordable electric van. The Kia PV5 Cargo has also been cleared for sale, giving fleet buyers more options at the smaller end of the market.

The V9 would sit above both in size and payload, targeting operators who need a full-size delivery or cargo van.
