BYD Caught Testing Massive Electric Van In China

Comments

BYD’s upcoming large electric delivery van, the E-Vali, has been spotted testing on public roads in China.

The Chinese EV giant has been road-testing a large electric van that could soon be delivering parcels in Europe and maybe even in Australia eventually.

Dubbed the E-Vali, this massive van stretches nearly 7 metres in length, putting it squarely in the large commercial van segment, right up against the likes of the Ford e-Transit and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter.

Is it For China Only?

The E-Vali was recently spotted in China, wearing camouflage as it rolled through road tests. Photos shared by Inside China Auto on X show the van’s tall, boxy shape alongside trucks, where it surprisingly holds its own in stature.

But it’s not just for China. BYD actually showcased the E-Vali in Germany at the 2024 IAA Transportation Show, aiming directly at European logistics companies. With on-road testing now in full swing, it's expected to launch in Europe in the second half of 2025.

And considering Australia’s growing demand for commercial EVs, especially with companies like Woolworths and Australia Post trialling electric fleets, the E-Vali could be a compelling candidate for local import.

What It’s Packing Under The Skin

While it might look like a box on wheels, there’s impressive tech inside. The van is powered by a 126 kWh BYD Blade battery, offering a range of up to 250 km. This should be enough for most urban and suburban delivery runs.

Charging times are practical for fleet operators:

  • 188 kW DC fast charging: 20 to 100% in about an hour.
  • 11 kW AC onboard charger, with a 22 kW upgrade option: full charge in under 6 hours, ideal for overnight depot charging.

Performance is also more than sufficient for its intended use thanks to BYD’s 6-in-1 electric drivetrain, the E-Vali puts out 150 kW and 550 Nm, with a top speed of 120 km/h. It’s not breaking speed records, but it’ll easily handle highways, hills, and heavy loads.

Space Matters: Big Cargo, Big Flexibility

Here’s where the E-Vali really stands out: cargo capacity. Depending on the configuration, you’ll get:

  • 3.5-tonne or 4.25-tonne GVM (gross vehicle mass)
  • 13.9 or 17.9 cubic metres of cargo volume

These figures are on part with or better than many diesel vans in its class, without the emissions or running costs.

Why Australia Should Pay Attention

Right now, Australia has very limited options in the large electric van space. Ford’s e-Transit is here, and the eSprinter is coming soon, but neither brand offers as much value as what the BYD will likely bring.

Government fleets and delivery companies under pressure to cut carbon will likely be watching closely. If the E-Vali arrives with similar pricing strategies as BYD’s cars, it could undercut competitors and fast-track fleet electrification.
