BYD Sealion 7

BYD has secured government approval for a more affordable version of its best-selling Sealion 7 electric SUV. The new variant features a smaller battery and less powerful motor, which could push the price below $50,000.

Less Power, Lower Price

Shared by EV Enthusiast Will Knott, Australian approval documents reveal a new E-RWD-L variant of the Sealion 7. This entry-level model features a 170kW rear-wheel-drive motor. That's 60kW less than the current RWD Premium model.

The power reduction suggests BYD is targeting a sub-$50,000 price point. This would make the Sealion 7 more competitive with other affordable EVs in the Australian market.

The current Premium model starts at $54,990 before on-road costs. A $5,000 reduction would position the new variant as a strong value proposition.

Battery and Range Details

The new variant is expected to pack a 71.8kWh battery. This is smaller than the 82.56kWh unit in current models. Range should sit around 420km on the WLTP cycle.

Weight comes in at 2,160kg. That's notably heavier than the Tesla Model Y at 1,921kg. The extra weight could impact efficiency and handling.

Towing capacity is rated at 750kg braked. This is lower than many competitors but adequate for light trailer duties.

BYD recently offered cashback incentives of $3,000 to $4,000 on existing stock. This helped maintain strong sales momentum through the end of the year.

The success demonstrates strong demand for well-priced electric SUVs in the Australian market. The new cheaper variant should expand that appeal further.

Current Line-up and Pricing

Vehicle information is currently unavailable.

The current Sealion 7 range includes two variants. The Premium starts at $54,990. The Performance model costs $63,990.

Both use a 230kW rear-wheel-drive motor and 82.56kWh battery pack. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 6.7 seconds. Range is rated at around 500km on the WLTP cycle.

The new entry-level variant is expected to launch in the first half of 2026. BYD has not confirmed exact timing or final pricing.

zecar's take

A sub-$50,000 Sealion 7 makes perfect sense for BYD. The current Premium already offers strong value at $54,990. Dropping below the psychological $50,000 barrier will attract more buyers.

The 170kW motor should still provide adequate performance for most drivers. The smaller 71.8kWh battery means less range, but 420km is enough for daily use and weekend trips.

This move could put further pressure on Tesla Model Y sales which is being impacted by increased competition.
