Xpeng has quietly given its most important global model a serious upgrade, and New Zealand is the first right hand drive market to get it. The refreshed Xpeng G6 SUV has now launched across the Tasman, bringing faster charging, more performance options and a noticeably upgraded chassis, all ahead of its long awaited Australian update.
For Australian EV buyers watching closely, this New Zealand launch offers a clear preview of what is likely headed our way next.
Short version.
The G6 just got a lot quicker, smarter and more complete.

New Zealand gets the full G6 lineup Australia missed
Unlike Australia, New Zealand buyers can now access the full G6 range, including the all wheel drive Performance variant that never made it locally.
The updated New Zealand pricing lineup includes:
- RWD Standard Range priced from NZ$59,990
- RWD Long Range priced from NZ$63,990
- AWD Long Range Performance priced from NZ$72,990
Converted directly, the Performance model lands at under AUD$63,000, which places it squarely in the same price conversation as Tesla Model Y Performance and premium Chinese rivals.
Performance is where the gap becomes obvious. The AWD G6 Performance sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds, while the rear wheel drive Long Range version completes the same run in 6.7 seconds. For context, the current Australian G6 starts at $54,800 before on road costs and does not offer an all wheel drive option.

Faster charging puts pressure on rivals
Charging is where the updated G6 really flexes.
Thanks to its 800 volt electrical architecture, the refreshed G6 can charge from 10 to 80% in just 12 minutes under ideal conditions. It supports peak DC charging speeds of up to 451 kW, although chargers capable of delivering that power are not yet publicly available in Australia.
Still, this puts the G6 in rare company. Only a handful of production EVs globally can match this pace, with the Zeekr 7X currently holding the local crown for fastest charging vehicle.
All New Zealand variants receive the larger 80.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, which also brings durability and thermal stability benefits over earlier packs.

Ride, handling and comfort get meaningful upgrades
Xpeng has also focused heavily on ride quality, addressing one of the most common critiques of early Chinese EVs.
The updated G6 features:
- Upgraded double wishbone front suspension
- Hydraulic damping for improved ride comfort
- Revised chassis tuning for better stability on coarse road surfaces
These changes are particularly relevant for Australian and New Zealand roads, where surface quality varies dramatically outside major cities.
The SUV is also slightly longer, growing by 5 mm to a total length of 4,758 mm, although the change is unlikely to be noticeable day to day.

Interior tech and driver assistance take a big step forward
Inside, the updates are more obvious.
The refreshed G6 introduces a larger central touchscreen, enhanced ambient lighting, new wheel designs and updated interior materials. Orange has been removed from the colour palette, replaced with more subdued paint options aimed at broader appeal.
On the technology front, the new G6 now runs:
- 8 megapixel front and rear cameras
- Two Nvidia Orin intelligent driving chips
- Vision based driver assistance hardware developed for China
While full self driving style features remain market dependent, the hardware foundation is now firmly in place.

What this means for Australia
The G6 was unveiled globally at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show and was described by Xpeng as its most important vehicle to date. Deliveries in China began later that year, followed by gradual expansion into right hand drive markets.
Australia sits firmly in that expansion plan. While local sales figures remain unofficial, industry tracking suggests more than 2,000 Xpeng EVs have already landed here, signalling early momentum for the brand.
New Zealand now gets the most complete version of the G6. Australia is expected to follow.
