Updated BYD Atto 3

Key Points

  • Power Boost: The 2026 BYD Atto 3 gains an extra 80 kW (107 hp), now producing 230 kW (308 hp).
  • Faster Charging: Expected switch to an 800V high-voltage system enabling up to 150 kW DC fast charging.
  • Potentially larger battery and rear-wheel drive

As reported by CarNewsChina, the BYD Yuan Plus (known in Australia and international markets as the Atto 3) is set for a major powertrain upgrade, with the 2026 model regulatory filing revealing a 107 hp (80 kW) boost over the current version, ~50% increase in power. The updated compact SUV will feature the same 230 kW (308 hp) electric motor found in the BYD Seal EV sedan, which should bring a new level of performance to the Yuan Plus.

This change also hints at a shift to BYD's advanced 800V electrical architecture (e-platform 3.0), allowing for significantly faster DC charging, potentially up to a peak rate of 150 kW DC, a 66% increase.

A Proven Global Success Story

Since launching in February 2022, the Atto 3 has been a cornerstone of BYD's global expansion, surpassing 1 million sales across more than 110 countries. However, as competition in the compact EV SUV segment intensifies, its modest power and charging speeds have begun to show their age.

The March 2025 refresh in China primarily addressed software and ADAS improvements, while adding some minor visual updates, leaving its powertrain untouched. This refreshed model which launched in China, was not launched in international markets. The newly approved update directly tackles the Atto3's shortcomings by significantly enhancing its electric motor and likely battery system.

Key Changes for the 2026 Atto 3

The refreshed model retains the same sleek look introduced earlier this year, including a large trapezoidal front intake, smoked LED headlights, and blackened D-pillars. It also but now features new 18-inch wheels for a sportier stance.

The Atto 3's dimensions remain 4455 mm (L) x 1875 mm (W) x 1615 mm (H) with a 2720 mm wheelbase. However, its curb weight has increased to 1,880 kg (up from 1,680–1,750 kg), likely due to a larger battery pack and more powerful, whose capacity is yet to be confirmed.

Under the hood (figuratively speaking), the model now uses the TZ200XYC permanent magnet motor, shared with the Denza N7 and BYD Seal EV, providing a maximum power output of 230 kW.

The charging port has moved from the right-side front to the right-side rear, which could potentially indicate the motor is now based at the rear of the vehicle, like the BYD Seal. This would help support the substantial increase in power, which the current front-wheel drive setup of the Atto 3 would struggle to support.

Performance and Market Outlook

BYD hasn't officially announced the updated Atto 3's release date, but it's expected to reach Chinese showrooms before the end of 2025. With the significant performance gains and likely faster charging capabilities, the 2026 Atto 3 should re-establish itself as a key contender in the competitive compact EV SUV market.

zecar's take

The BYD Atto 3's upcoming powertrain upgrade addresses its biggest shortcomings: performance and charging speed. The potential shift to a rear-wheel drive drivetrain will also provide much needed support for the power boost and improve overall driving dynamics.

With the launch of the dynamic MG S5 and the affordable Leapmotor B10 (Australia's cheapest electric SUV), these upgrades will be needed in order for the Atto 3 to remain competitive in the small electric SUV space in Australia and globally.
