Key Points

  • Battery electric vehicles hit a record 14.9% of new-car sales in March 2026, up from 12.2% in February.
  • BEV sales surged 88.9% year-on-year to 15,839 units, driven by rising fuel prices linked to Middle East conflict.
  • PHEV sales also rose 18.5% year-on-year to 8,215 units, with both segments outpacing the overall market.

Australia recorded its highest-ever share of electric vehicle sales in March 2026. One in seven new vehicles sold was fully electric, a milestone the local market has never reached before.

A total of 106,065 passenger vehicles were delivered in March 2026, down 2.6% on the same month last year. But within that softer overall market, battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) were clear standouts.

Why EV Sales Surged

The main driver was fuel prices. Conflict in the Middle East pushed diesel past $3.00 per litre and 91-octane petrol beyond $2.50 per litre. The government later cut fuel excise by 32 cents per litre, but the damage to petrol and diesel demand was already done.

The surge in EV interest was visible beyond just new-car sales. Auction house Pickles reported 60% growth in used EV sales in March compared to February. Commonwealth Bank reported a 161% increase in new electric-car finance applications since the start of March.

The FCAI's chief executive Tony Weber noted it is too early to call this a structural shift, but acknowledged the disruption to fuel supply and the ongoing review of the fringe benefits tax (FBT) concession for EVs are both contributing factors.

If fuel prices remain elevated, or rise again, March 2026 may prove to be the start of a sustained shift rather than a one-month spike. The momentum from finance applications and used-car demand suggests buyers are actively reconsidering their next vehicle.

Top Selling BEV Models

The Tesla Model Y held the top spot among BEVs, with 2,818 deliveries in March. That placed it third overall in the national sales chart, behind only the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

Tesla finished 13th overall with 3,485 registrations, up 23.2% year-on-year. Its two models, the Model Y and Model 3, accounted for the bulk of that volume.

Kia was another strong performer in the BEV space. The EV3 (461 units, up 147.8% year-on-year) and EV5 (587 units) helped Kia reach second place overall in the national brand chart.

PHEV Sales: Steady Growth Despite Headwinds

PHEV sales reached 8,215 units in March 2026, up 18.5% year-on-year. This is notable because March 2025 saw a rush of PHEV deliveries in the final days of a lucrative tax exemption, making the year-on-year comparison a tough one to beat.

PHEVs accounted for 7.8% of the market in March. They appeal to buyers who want lower running costs but are not yet ready to go fully electric. With fuel prices high, that value proposition is stronger than ever.

What This Means for the Months Ahead

March 2026 is the first month where the impact of high fuel prices is clearly visible in new-car sales data. The conflict in the Middle East broke out too late in February to affect showroom demand that month.

If fuel prices stay high, or rise again, the shift toward BEVs and PHEVs is likely to continue. The pipeline of new models is strong. BYD has already launched the Atto 1, Atto 2 and Sealion 8 this year. More brands are entering the market.

The FCAI has called on governments to invest in public charging infrastructure, particularly in regional areas and locations where home charging is not practical. That remains a key barrier to wider EV adoption.

The FBT exemption review is also a factor. Businesses that use EVs as fleet vehicles benefit from the current exemption. Any change to that policy could affect demand from the business buyer segment, which accounted for 40,296 deliveries in March.
