Key Points
- Polestar 2 will receive a second-generation model, retaining its current name
- Earlier rumours of a “Polestar 8” have been dismissed

- The new model is scheduled for no earlier than 2028, after the Polestar 7 SUV

Polestar has officially confirmed its best-selling electric vehicle will live on and keep its familiar name. The Polestar 2, which represents four out of five Polestars sold globally, will transition into a second-generation model. The announcement ends months of speculation about a possible name change to “Polestar 8.”

Keeping the Name, Keeping the Customers
Speaking to Australian media in Munich, Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller said the decision was about loyalty to the car’s global customer base.
“I want to have those current Polestar 2 customers back,” Lohscheller said. “We built up the car, we did a great job, and I want to keep them in the family.”
This commitment suggests the successor will not radically depart from the current model’s identity. The Polestar 2 has been the company’s flagship since its 2020 debut and remains a strong seller, with about 6,300 units delivered in Australia alone.

A Long Wait for the Next Generation
The new model won’t arrive anytime soon. Production is expected no earlier than 2028, following the launch of the upcoming Polestar 7 compact SUV.
The timing could push the second-generation Polestar 2 into its eighth year on sale before replacement — unusually long for an EV but a sign of Polestar’s confidence in its current offering.
Few design details are confirmed, but the next Polestar 2 will ride on a new platform shared with future Polestar models. Newly appointed design chief Philipp Roemers, formerly of Audi, will shape its look.

The Road Ahead for Polestar 2
Until the next-generation model arrives, Polestar will continue to refine the current version to keep it competitive. Recent updates include a shift to rear-wheel drive for single-motor variants and upgraded battery packs. More updates are expected before the next-generation model enters production.
