Key Points

  • Amber Electric and BYD Australia have expanded their vehicle-to-grid (V2G) trial to include the Sealion 7, alongside the already-eligible Atto 3.
  • Existing Atto 3 and Sealion 7 owners can apply to join Amber's V2G program, and buyers of a new eligible vehicle get a 6 percent discount off the base RRP.
  • BYD's battery warranty support covers Sealion 7 owners only while they take part in Amber's official V2G trial, not for V2G or vehicle-to-home use outside it.

Amber Electric and BYD Australia have expanded their vehicle-to-grid (V2G) partnership to include the Sealion 7, opening Australia's largest live V2G program to owners of BYD's top-selling EV. The move builds on the Atto 3's role as the first BYD model in the trial.

The expansion comes as EV sales climb across the country. In August 2026, battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles combined accounted for more than half of new vehicle sales for the first time, with battery electric vehicles alone making up 25.6 percent of total sales.

How Amber's V2G Program Works

Amber is the only Australian energy retailer that passes through the wholesale electricity price to customers, and it automates batteries, EVs and solar to take advantage of price swings. Its V2G program is backed by $13.6 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is scaling to 1,000 households.

More than 50 V2G sites are currently live, with a waitlist of more than 8,000 people. Amber describes it as the largest program of its kind in the country. Under the program, eligible EVs work as batteries on wheels: owners can power their home from the car, cut their energy bills and earn credits by exporting stored power back to the grid. Participation includes a 4,000kWh discharge limit.

Sealion 7 Buyers Get V2G Access and a Price Discount

Existing Atto 3 and Sealion 7 owners can apply to join Amber's V2G program with the car they already have. Buyers can also purchase an eligible Sealion 7 (Premium or Performance) or Atto 3 Evo (Dynamic or Premium) new and receive a 6 percent discount off the base RRP, including GST. Today's announcement follows the early success of the Atto 3 in the program, which BYD says demonstrated the technology's appeal and delivered strong results for customers.

Sealion 7 Battery Size and V2L Capability

The Sealion 7 launched in Australia in February 2025 and has become BYD's top-selling EV, with more than 30,000 sold to date. It runs on BYD's Blade Battery technology, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack rated at 82.56kWh across both the Premium and Performance variants.

That is roughly six times the capacity of a Tesla Powerwall, the most common home battery in Australia, which is rated at 13.5kWh. It is also larger than the average home battery system installed in Australia in 2025, which reached about 19kWh nationally, according to market data. A single Sealion 7 battery holds more energy than most Australian homes have installed in fixed storage.

The Sealion 7 includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) as standard, letting owners power appliances directly from the car. With V2G access now added, owners can also feed power back into the grid or use it to run their home.

Warranty Coverage Is Limited to the V2G Trial

As with the Atto 3, Sealion 7 owners taking part in Amber's program will have their EV battery covered under BYD's comprehensive warranty support. That cover applies only to vehicles enrolled in Amber's official V2G trial. It does not extend to V2G or vehicle-to-home use outside the Amber program, or through other providers.

What Amber and BYD Say

Clare Rainbow, Head of V2G at Amber Electric, said:

“We're the leading residential V2G program in Australia, and having BYD expand its support to the Sealion 7, its best-selling model, is a big deal. It means a much bigger group of Australians can access V2G and start earning money from a car that would otherwise spend most of its time parked. That's how this technology starts to become mainstream.”

Sajid Hasan, Chief Product Officer at BYD, said:

“The Atto 3's involvement in V2G has shown us the value this can unlock for customers, and as strong supporters of the technology, we're proud to broaden that partnership with Amber. Bringing the Sealion 7, our most popular vehicle in Australia, into the program means more drivers can turn their EV into an asset at home.”
