BYD has officially pulled the wraps off its latest electric sedan, the Seal 06 EV, at the Chongqing Auto Show, marking another strong push into the budget-friendly EV market. Starting from just 109,800 yuan (~$15,270 AUD), the Seal 06 EV joins BYD’s fast-growing Seal family and slots in as a sleek, all-electric alternative to the popular Seal 06 DM-i plug-in hybrid, which has already racked up over 250,000 sales.
With its sharp styling, practical features, and impressive range for the price, the Seal 06 EV is shaping up to be BYD’s next big volume-seller.

Think ‘Model 3 Vibes,’ but Cheaper
Starting at just ¥109,800 (about $15,270 AUD), the Seal 06 EV is BYD’s budget-friendly electric sedan. Built on the company’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo, it’s a fully electric alternative to the plug-in hybrid Seal 06 DM-i, which already sold 251,886 units in China. Clearly, BYD knows how to win over the masses and now it wants to do the same with a fully electric version.
And yes, if you're wondering how a car this polished can cost about as much as a MacBook Pro and a flight to Bali… you're not alone.

Exterior: Low-Key Flashy
Visually, the Seal 06 EV is clean and confident. It’s got that closed-off EV front (read: no grille needed), a bold lighting setup, and flush-fitting door handles for a modern, aerodynamic silhouette. It’s 110mm shorter than its hybrid sibling, however BYD stretched the wheelbase to 2,820 mm, meaning more cabin room for passengers and pets alike.
Dimensions | Specs |
Length x Width x Height | 4,720 x 1,880 x 1,495 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,820 mm |
Boot Space | 423 litres + 65L frunk |

Interior
Inside, BYD's gone full future mode. There’s a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen (yes, it swivels), running DiLink 100 software, a small digital instrument cluster, and plenty of creature comforts—including 30+ storage spaces, dual wireless phone chargers, and 2 cup holders (because priorities).
There’s also a DiPilot 100 system, BYD’s version of smart driving tech. It includes Navigate On Autopilot for highways and a surprisingly chill Autonomous Emergency Braking system that can halt the car from 80km/h. No LiDAR though—it’s camera-based, or as BYD would call it, a “God’s Eye.”
Under the Hood
Here’s where the Seal 06 EV gets serious. It’s offered in three rear-wheel-drive variants, with power outputs ranging from mild to “did someone order torque?”
Variant | Power (kW / hp) | Battery | Range (CLTC) | 0–50km/h | Top Speed |
Entry-Level | 110kW / 148hp | 46.08 kWh LFP | 470 km | 4.1 sec | 160 km/h |
Mid-Tier | 160kW / 215hp | 56.6 kWh LFP | 545 km | 3.1 sec | 160 km/h |
High-End (same motor) | 160kW / 215hp | 56.6 kWh LFP | 545 km | 3.1 sec | 160 km/h |
Charging is surprisingly quick for the price point—30% to 80% in just 24 minutes with up to 103 kW DC fast charging. For reference, that’s about the time it takes to grab a flat white and scroll your news feed.

Seal of Approval?
The Seal 06 EV lands with a starting price of $15,270 AUD, topping out at around $18,050 AUD. That’s well below the price of most new ICE sedans in Australia.
With strong sales already in the plug-in hybrid version and over 25,000 Seal family units sold in May alone, BYD’s strategy is clear: offer stylish, practical EVs at prices regular people can actually afford. The only question now is—will it come to Australia?
