BYD to deploy 15,000 megawatt EV chargers across China

Comments

China’s largest EV maker BYD has launched an ambitious megawatt charging rollout, backed by two major partnerships that aim to add 15,000 ultra-fast chargers across the country.

At the 2025 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Auto Show, BYD revealed new deals with Xiaoju Charging and Xindietu, two of China’s largest charging infrastructure providers. Xiaoju, affiliated with ride-hailing giant Didi, will build 10,000 chargers, while Xindietu is set to install another 5,000. BYD itself had previously committed to building 4,000 units, with over 500 already operational across 200+ cities.

Wider strategy for national coverage

These partnerships form part of BYD’s strategy to rapidly scale megawatt-level infrastructure, targeting both urban and highway corridors. The goal is to support the next generation of EVs capable of ultra-fast charging, using high-voltage battery systems developed in-house.

Xiaoju currently serves more than 34 million users through partnerships with over 8,400 businesses, while Xindietu has integrated over 90% of public EV stations across 400 cities in China. Their networks are expected to provide national backbone coverage for megawatt charging access.

New tech behind the rollout

The megawatt charging technology was introduced earlier this year alongside BYD’s new Han L and Tang L electric SUVs. These models feature 1,000V battery systems capable of charging up to 400 km of range in just five minutes. Dual-gun charging almost doubles the power flow, slashing recharge time by up to 70% compared to current fast chargers. Even with a single gun, charging is 45% quicker.

This makes BYD one of the first automakers globally to deploy commercial-ready megawatt charging hardware for consumer EVs. The system is also compatible with existing public fast-charging platforms, thanks to BYD’s smart voltage management.

Sales data reflects market interest

The technology appears to be translating into sales. In April 2025 alone, the Han L sold 10,483 units and the Tang L sold 11,406, with combined deliveries from the Han and Tang family exceeding 40,000 vehicles. BYD credited the strong early demand to interest in shorter charging times and better infrastructure support.

For international markets like Australia, where most public DC chargers peak at 350kW, BYD’s megawatt rollout is an indicator of where fast-charging is heading. While megawatt systems are currently more relevant to commercial freight and high-mileage segments, they may soon support passenger EVs on longer regional routes as battery sizes grow.
