Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD has confirmed its latest electric vehicle, the Atto 2, will arrive in Australia during the fourth quarter of 2024. Known as the "Yuan Up" in China, the compact SUV represents the company's continued expansion into the Australian market as demand for electric vehicles grows.

The Atto 2 is constructed using BYD's e-Platform 3.0 architecture, which incorporates Cell-to-Body technology. This design approach increases chassis torsional rigidity by 32 per cent compared to conventional construction methods.

Key Specs and Features

Two Specification Levels Available BYD will offer the Atto 2 in Essential and Premium variants from launch. Both models share identical powertrain specifications and mechanical components.

51.13kWh Battery Pack The vehicle uses BYD's Blade battery technology with a capacity of 51.13kWh. This lithium iron phosphate battery feeds power to a single permanent magnet synchronous motor mounted at the front axle.

130kW Power Output Both specification levels produce 130kW of power and 290Nm of torque. Drive is delivered to the front wheels through an integrated 8-in-1 powertrain system that combines multiple components into a single unit.

Integrated Powertrain Design The 8-in-1 system consolidates the motor, reducer, motor controller, on-board charger, DC-DC converter, power distribution unit, battery management system and vehicle control unit. This integration reduces noise, vibration and harshness levels whilst improving overall reliability.

MacPherson Strut Suspension The Atto 2 employs MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a torsion beam rear axle. BYD has tuned the suspension setup to provide comfort for both urban driving and highway use.

The exterior design comes from BYD's internal design team, led by former Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger. The front end features LED lighting with chrome surrounds, whilst the profile showcases short overhangs and flowing lines.

Flush Door Handles The vehicle incorporates flush-mounted door handles and a floating roofline design. A panoramic sunroof is fitted as standard across both specification levels.

Full-Width Rear Light Bar The rear styling includes a continuous LED light bar spanning the vehicle's width. A rear spoiler completes the SUV's exterior design theme.

Interior appointments vary between the two specification levels, though both feature synthetic leather seating and an 8.8-inch digital instrument display. The Essential model receives a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment screen, whilst the Premium variant upgrades to a 12.8-inch unit.

Standard Safety Equipment Six airbags are fitted as standard, along with BYD's suite of advanced driver assistance systems. The Essential model includes a reversing camera, whilst Premium specifications add 360-degree surround-view cameras.

Vehicle-to-Load Capability Both variants offer Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing the vehicle to power external devices. NFC digital key technology and adaptive cruise control are also included across the range.

"With its exciting looks, superlative technology, and eminent versatility, the Atto 2 promises to be a game-changer in the small-size SUV segment," Wing You, BYD Australia General Manager, commented.

"The Atto family of vehicles is expanding in Australia, and we're confident this latest addition will be well received by local buyers," You added.

BYD has not yet released pricing information for the Atto 2, stating that full specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's launch date later this year.
