Zeekr Eyes Major Expansion in Australia with Bold Growth Plans

Comments

China’s premium EV brand Zeekr is accelerating its Australian ambitions. It aims to sell up to 10,000 vehicles by 2026 while significantly expanding its dealership network. After launching local deliveries in late 2024, the Geely-owned brand is seeing strong demand and positioning itself as Australia’s first premium Chinese EV marque.

Building Momentum with New Models

Zeekr has already received over 5,000 expressions of interest from Australian buyers and has delivered nearly 200 units of its Zeekr X SUV. However, the brand’s real test begins later this year when it introduces the 7X SUV, a medium-to-large electric crossover expected to challenge the Tesla Model Y in the premium EV space.

The company is setting modest targets for 2025, aiming for 2,500 to 3,000 sales. However, the long-term goal is far more ambitious—doubling or even tripling sales in 2026 to reach 10,000 units. Zeekr believes these figures are within reach, especially if the 7X can arrive earlier than planned.

Expanding the Dealer Network

To support its sales ambitions, Zeekr is working to establish a strong retail presence. The company currently operates showrooms in Perth and Canberra, along with temporary locations in Melbourne, Sydney (Parramatta), and Geelong, and pop-up displays in major shopping centers.

The expansion plan for 2025 includes opening 12 to 15 full-scale dealerships across the country. Major cities like Sydney and Melbourne will each have at least three locations, while other cities will see one or two new dealerships. Zeekr is focused on partnering with dealers who have experience selling premium brands to ensure a strong customer experience.

Setting Itself Apart from Mass-Market Chinese Brands

Unlike Chinese manufacturers such as MG and BYD, which focus on affordability, Zeekr is positioning itself in the premium and luxury segment. This puts it in direct competition with brands like Volvo and Polestar, which also fall under the Geely umbrella.

Zeekr has already proven its premium appeal in other markets. It is currently the number one premium auto brand in Hong Kong and ranks among the top five premium brands in Thailand and Israel.

What’s Next for Zeekr in Australia?

Zeekr has entered the market with three models—the Zeekr X small SUV, the 009 luxury people mover, and the upcoming 7X SUV. While the 009’s popularity in Australia was uncertain, the company has been surprised by the strong interest in the high-performance electric van.

Beyond these initial models, Zeekr offers a broader lineup in China, including the 007 sedans, 001 fastbacks, and Mix People mover. However, the company has yet to confirm which additional vehicles will be produced in right-hand drive for the Australian market.

With strong early demand, an aggressive dealership expansion plan, and premium brand positioning, Zeekr is making a bold play in the Australian EV space. If its plans materialise, it could quickly become a serious contender in the country’s growing electric vehicle market.
