One of the biggest frustrations for electric vehicle owners is the need to juggle multiple apps and accounts just to access charging stations. Tesla, operator of the world’s largest fast-charging network, believes it has found the answer. The company has announced MultiPass, a new feature that allows Tesla owners to start charging at non-Tesla stations using nothing more than their Tesla app or key card.

A single app for all charging needs
In a recent update shared via Tesla’s Charging X account, the company outlined how MultiPass works. Drivers can locate third-party chargers directly within the Tesla app, then begin charging sessions with either their phone or Tesla key card. Charging history is also logged in the app, consolidating everything in one place.
Max de Zegher, Tesla’s director of charging, explained the motivation behind the feature:
“Nobody likes creating more accounts with payment details and passwords. For charging, this can even mean needing a third-party charging card mailed to your house.”
The rollout begins in the Netherlands, with Tesla promising rapid expansion to other markets if adoption proves strong.

Why this matters for Australia
The feature could be particularly valuable for Australian drivers. While Tesla operates around 130 Supercharger sites locally, more than 1,300 other charging locations are run by networks such as Chargefox, Evie Networks, Ampol, and others. Each typically requires its own app or RFID card.
With nearly 150,000 Teslas now on Australian roads, MultiPass could streamline charging access for a large portion of EV owners. If expanded here, it would reduce friction for new EV adopters and make long-distance travel easier across multiple networks.

What owners are saying
Early adopters in Europe have already embraced the feature. One Tesla driver noted:
“Signed up this morning. Ditching my charging fob. Love it! I was always a strong proponent. Glad to see this finally come to fruition.”
The idea reportedly traces back to Tesla owners’ requests on X earlier this year, where drivers called for a way to remove the clutter of RFID cards and multiple apps.
