Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) could soon be making its way to Australian streets. According to the company’s Country Director for Australia and New Zealand, there are no regulatory hurdles preventing a local rollout.
That means it’s no longer a question of “if”—it’s a matter of “when.”

Tesla recently showcased its FSD Supervised system navigating the heart of Melbourne’s central business district. The demo, shared by Tesla AI’s official account on social platform X, quickly drew attention. It demonstrated not just handling complex traffic scenarios, but also smoothly executing one of Melbourne’s trickiest inner-city moves: the hook turn.
The city is notorious for these right-hand turns from the left lane, but Tesla’s system didn’t faulter.

No Red Tape Holding It Back
Speaking to News.com.au, Tesla’s Thom Drew confirmed what many in the EV space have been hoping to hear.
“There’s currently no blockers in Australia to releasing Full Self Driving Supervised, as we have in North America,” Drew said.
This means regulatory approval, often the biggest speed bump for autonomous driving tech, is no longer the issue. The green light is there. Now it’s up to Tesla to finalise local testing and calibration.
“We have a global engineering team working across markets,” Drew added. “That’s Elon’s push—FSD is a top priority globally.”

A Global Tech, Tested for Local Roads
Tesla’s FSD Supervised is already being tested on complex road networks around the world. The company recently demonstrated its capabilities at Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, one of Europe’s most chaotic roundabouts.
In China, a Tesla owner reportedly used FSD to drive over 4,000 kilometres from Henan Province to Mt. Everest’s base camp, an endurance run showcasing both trust and functionality.
While Australia may not have mountain passes like the Himalayas or intersections as tangled as Paris, our cities present their own unique challenges—from erratic lane markings to tight CBD turns. That’s where local calibration matters most, and that’s what Tesla is currently focused on.
