Tesla has revealed the Model Y L, a stretched 6-seater version of its best-selling SUV, and demand in China has been immediate. Local reports suggest the vehicle secured close to 40,000 orders on its first day, despite requiring non-refundable deposits.

Priced from the equivalent of $A72,700, the Model Y L enters one of the world’s most competitive EV markets but offers more space, comfort, and range than the standard Model Y.

Bigger, Longer, More Practical

The Model Y L is 186 mm longer than the current Long Range variant, giving it a total length of 4,976 mm. This extra size makes room for a third row of seats and significantly more cargo capacity. With the second and third rows folded flat, storage expands to over 2,500 litres.

Tesla has introduced a new cabin layout featuring:

  • Two captain’s chairs in the second row with armrests and a dedicated screen.
  • A third row with two additional seats, complete with cupholders.
  • Adjustable headrests in the front row for extra comfort.

Inside, the central display has also grown slightly, now measuring 16 inches compared to the standard Model Y’s 15.4-inch screen.

Performance and Range

The Model Y L isn’t just about space. Tesla has fitted the SUV with continuously variable dampers, first seen on the latest Model 3 Performance, making this the first Model Y to feature the tech.

On the performance side, it delivers a 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds, placing it among the faster family EVs available.

Battery improvements push range to 751 km on the CLTC cycle, which translates to an estimated ~600 km WLTP, making it Tesla’s longest-range SUV to date.

Availability and Outlook

Deliveries in China are due to begin in September 2025, with export markets expected to follow. Industry speculation suggests Tesla may build a right-hand-drive version for regions such as Australia, the UK, and Southeast Asia, although this has yet to be confirmed. More details are expected later this year.

If it does arrive locally, the Model Y L would sit above the Long Range and Performance variants, targeting Australian families who want more space without compromising on range or speed.
