Nio Firefly Confirmed In For Australia

Key Points

  • Nio confirms the Firefly electric hatch for Australia but timing remains a mystery
  • Expected price is about $35,000 positioning it between the Dolphin and Mini Cooper SE
  • Firefly targets top tier safety with a Euro NCAP 5 star rating
  • A rear drive motor and 41 kWh battery deliver about 320 km of range

The Nio Firefly has finally been confirmed for Australia, but timing is still a mystery. After months of spy shots, local sightings and paperwork trickling through government channels, the compact EV is officially on the way. What we still do not have is a launch date. Nio says it is eager to enter the market, but only once the right distributor is secured.

Searching For the Right Australian Partner

Rather than launching directly through a local head office, Nio wants an independent distributor to handle Firefly’s arrival. That mirrors the early strategies used by BYD and XPeng before both brands eventually shifted to factory-run importers.

A spokesperson for Firefly has advised local media that discussions are ongoing with several contenders. The goal is a partnership that can deliver a sustainable long term sales and support network. The company insists it is moving quickly but is not rushing into the wrong arrangement.

Testing on Aussie Roads Already Underway

Even without a locked-in launch date, the Firefly is quietly preparing for life here. Nio has multiple cars undergoing local road testing as part of its global safety program. The brand wants the Firefly to hit a rare trifecta of safety ratings, meeting the standards of China, Europe and Australia.

The right hand drive version is complete and ready to go, with several configurations already built specifically for markets like Australia. Nio says all current testing and validation work is aimed at setting up a smooth launch once a distributor is chosen.

Nio Firefly right-hand drive version built for global markets

Built as a Global Model

The Firefly is already confirmed for other right hand drive regions, starting in Singapore in January 2026 and the UK later that year. Production for these markets has already begun. It has also scored a full five star Euro NCAP result, strengthening its credentials as a global city car rather than a domestic Chinese export project.

What It Could Cost Here

If European pricing is any clue, the Firefly may land from roughly $35,000 before on road costs. That would place it above the BYD Dolphin but well under the Mini Cooper SE, giving it an interesting gap to fill.

Size wise, it is a neat little thing. At just over four metres long and riding on a 2615 millimetre wheelbase, the Firefly sits firmly in the light car class. Think VW Polo or Toyota Yaris, with a stance that is almost as wide as the larger BYD Dolphin.

Performance and Specs at a Glance

The Australian approval documents list a single rear mounted electric motor with 105 kilowatts and 200 newton metres, paired in Europe with a 41.2 kilowatt hour battery. That setup delivers around 320 to 330 kilometres of WLTP range depending on wheel choice. It also offers brisk charging, hitting 80 per cent in twenty nine minutes at up to 100 kilowatts DC.

Acceleration to one hundred takes a claimed 8.1 seconds.

Available Features Overseas

European versions offer a surprising amount of equipment for a compact EV. Highlights include:

  • LED headlights
  • 13.2 inch centre touchscreen
  • 6 inch instrument display
  • Heated, ventilated and massaging front seats
  • Power adjustable seating for driver and passenger
  • Leather look upholstery with cloth or microfibre trim
  • Single zone climate control
  • Wireless phone charging
  • USB C fast ports
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • 14 speaker audio
  • Full suite of safety and driver assist systems

When Will It Actually Launch

That is still unknown. Nio says it will issue more detailed timing once a distributor is locked in and final safety testing wraps up. For now, all signs point to progress, but no one is ready to name a month or even a year.

One thing is certain. The Firefly is coming. The only question left is when Australians will finally get to drive this small but ambitious electric hatch.
