The Mercedes is quicker to 100km/h than both BMWs. It claims 43km more range than the i3 40 xDrive, while the i3 50 xDrive claims 159km more than the Mercedes. BMW also quotes a higher peak charging rate than the 330kW Mercedes-Benz claims.

The C-Class also costs far less than the EQE 350 4MATIC did at launch. That model arrived in Australia in 2023 at $154,900 plus on-road costs, with 215kW, a 6.3 second 0-100km/h time and 170kW DC charging. The C 400 4MATIC electric costs $49,200 less and has 145kW more power.

The C-Class will take over the EQE's role in the Mercedes-Benz electric sedan line-up as that model is phased out, above the smaller CLA electric. You can compare more models on Zecar's list of electric sedans.

Design: illuminated grille and GT-style rear

The all-new C-Class electric is designed around an electric architecture. Mercedes-Benz said the low front end flows into a coupé-like silhouette with a flowing roofline and a GT-style rear.

The Mercedes-Benz grille has a wide chrome frame and a smoked glass-look panel with 1,050 illuminated dots. It also has an integrated central star and an illuminated surround. Animated lighting sequences play when the car is unlocked, locked or charging.

DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps use micro-LED technology. Mercedes-Benz said the illumination field is about 40 per cent larger than the previous generation, while using up to 50 per cent less energy. Adaptive high beam is designed to avoid dazzling other road users. Cornering lights use camera and map information to light bends more precisely.

The Night Package adds high-gloss black mirror housings. The grille surround, the Mercedes-Benz pattern and the front apron are finished in dark chrome. Customers can remove the Night Package at no extra cost for a more understated look.

The standard wheels are 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloys. The exterior also has dark-tinted glass and metallic paint.

Interior and technology

Inside, the AMG Line adds a multifunction sports steering wheel wrapped in ARTICO man-made leather, AMG floor mats and a black fabric roof lining. The dashboard is ARTICO-trimmed, and the centre console has brown open-pore fineline birch wood trim.

The MBUX Superscreen is standard. It combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch central touchscreen and a 14-inch front-passenger display under one sweeping glass surface. A head-up display is also fitted.

The cabin runs the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). It brings infotainment, navigation, charging, driver assistance and comfort functions into one system. It connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud and supports over-the-air updates, so new features can arrive without a workshop visit.

MB.OS also powers the fourth generation of MBUX. The MBUX Virtual Assistant uses technology from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini. Mercedes-Benz said it understands natural speech, answers complex questions and holds multi-part conversations.

Navigation is based on Google Maps. It works with Mercedes-Benz Navigation with Electric Intelligence, which plans routes and charging stops using battery charge, traffic conditions and driving style. It can also prepare the battery to the best temperature for DC fast charging.

The AMG Line Sports Seat Package is standard. The front seats are heated and electrically adjustable, with memory and lumbar support. A Burmester 3D surround sound system and Ambient Lighting Plus are also fitted. Ambient Lighting Plus lets occupants change the cabin lighting to suit their mood.

ARTICO upholstery and steering wheel trim are standard and use independently certified vegan materials. Premium materials cover all soft-touch surfaces, including the headliner, pillars, door panels and carpet.

Surround lighting projects animated Mercedes-Benz patterns when occupants enter or leave the car, and a sporty driving sound is fitted. Acoustic glass reduces heat and noise, and the KEYLESS-GO Convenience Package is included. The ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL system filters incoming air to reduce fine dust and pollen.

SKY CONTROL panoramic roof

The SKY CONTROL panoramic roof is split into nine electrically adjustable segments instead of one dimmable panel. Occupants can change the transparency of each section. Mercedes-Benz said this gives targeted protection against glare and strong sunlight while keeping the open feel of a glass roof.

Performance, range and charging

The C 400 4MATIC electric has dual electric motors with up to 360kW and 800Nm. 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits power between the front and rear axles. The car reaches 100km/h in 4.0 seconds.

A two-speed transmission sits on the rear axle. First gear covers acceleration from a standstill and urban efficiency. Second gear supports sustained power delivery and efficient motorway driving.

The usable battery capacity is 94kWh. Mercedes-Benz quotes a WLTP-tested range of up to 753km depending on specification, and energy consumption of 16.1kWh/100km. It has not said which specification achieves 753km. You can compare the figure with other long range EVs in Australia.

The 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 330kW. Under optimal conditions on a compatible high-power DC charger, Mercedes-Benz said the car can add up to 325km of WLTP range in about 10 minutes. You can compare charging speeds across the fastest-charging EVs in Zecar's database.

The rear luggage compartment holds 470 litres. A 101-litre frunk suits charging cables, smaller luggage or everyday items.

Driver assistance

MB.DRIVE driving and parking assistance is standard. It includes Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist Plus, a lane-keeping function, speed-limit warnings and Traffic Sign Assist. Brake Assist and evasive steering assistance support the driver in hazardous situations. Exit warnings alert occupants to approaching traffic when a door is opened.

MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 combines PARKTRONIC parking sensors, automated parking assistance and a 360-degree camera system.

Options: Agility and Comfort Package and Luxury Package

The Agility and Comfort Package ($5,200 MRLP) adds AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent suspension control, plus rear-axle steering. AIRMATIC adapts the suspension to road and driving conditions. Rear-axle steering turns up to 4.5 degrees. It improves manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds.

The Luxury Package ($8,200 MRLP) adds climatised front seats, heated rear seats and an illuminated star pattern on the panoramic roof after dark. At the centre of the package is the 99.3cm (39.1-inch) MBUX Hyperscreen. It covers almost the whole dashboard under continuous glass. Mercedes-Benz restricts dynamic content to when the car is parked to limit driver distraction.
