The first customer deliveries of the six seat Tesla Model Y L have officially begun in Australia, arriving just a month after the stretched variant appeared on Tesla’s local configurator. The rapid turnaround from order to delivery signals strong early momentum for what is now the brand’s most practical and longest range electric vehicle.
Initial handovers are already taking place across the country, including in Queensland where one of the first owners, Thanh L, shared images of a white Model Y L at delivery. The post quickly gained traction in EV communities after being reshared by Roland L from the
YouTube channel on X.“I’m so proud to be the first in Queensland taking delivery of the 2026 Tesla Model Y L,” the owner said.
Beyond the quick rollout, Tesla is positioning this variant as more than just a larger SUV. The Model Y L offers almost 14 per cent more driving range than any other Model Y, making it not only the longest range version of the model, but the longest range Tesla currently available.

A larger Model Y built for families
The Model Y L builds on the standard Model Y platform but introduces a longer body and extended wheelbase to accommodate a third row.
Compared with the regular version, the new model is noticeably larger:
- 177mm longer overall
- Extended wheelbase for improved cabin space
- Close to five metres in total length
Inside, Tesla has reworked the layout to focus on comfort and usability. The traditional rear bench has been replaced by two individual captain’s chairs, offering easier access to the third row and a more premium seating experience.
Second row highlights include:
- Retractable armrests
- Electronic controls via seat buttons or rear display
- Increased spacing compared to the standard Model Y
The third row introduces two additional seats with practical usability, including cup holders and fold flat capability for added cargo flexibility.
Both rear rows can be folded electronically, unlocking more than 2,530 litres of cargo capacity, making it one of the most versatile mid size electric SUVs currently available.

Powertrain, range and efficiency gains
Tesla offers the Model Y L in a single dual motor all wheel drive configuration, balancing performance with extended range.
| Specification | Tesla Model Y L |
| Drivetrain | Dual electric motors |
| Drive type | All-wheel drive |
| Power | Up to 378kW |
| Torque | 590Nm |
| Battery chemistry | Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) |
| 0–100km/h (claimed) | 5.0 seconds |
| Top speed | 201 km/h |
| Claimed driving range | 681km (WLTP) |
| DC fast charging | Up to 250kW |
The 681km WLTP range represents more than a 13 per cent increase over the Model Y Long Range AWD.
Early real world impressions suggest efficiency is also strong, with consumption figures around 13.9kWh per 100km recorded during freeway driving.
A major addition is vehicle to load capability, marking the first time Tesla has introduced this feature in Australia. The system can supply up to 3.3kW of power, allowing owners to run appliances or tools directly from the vehicle.

Dimensions and practicality
The larger footprint translates into meaningful gains in space and usability.
| Dimension / Capacity | Measurement |
| Length | 4969 mm |
| Width | 2129 mm |
| Height | 1668 mm |
| Wheelbase | 3040 mm |
| Boot capacity (all seats up) | 420 L |
| Boot capacity (third row folded) | 1076 L |
| Boot capacity (second & third rows folded) | 2423 L |
| Front trunk (frunk) | 116 L |
The extended wheelbase significantly improves second and third row comfort, making the Model Y L a more viable option for families compared to the five seat version.
Technology, comfort and features
The Model Y L retains Tesla’s minimalist cabin design while adding several comfort and technology upgrades.
Key features include:
- Premium audio system with 18 speakers and subwoofer

- Rear seat control display
- Adjustable front headrests
- Five exterior paint options
The SUV also introduces continuously variable dampers, improving ride comfort and handling, particularly important given the larger size and added passenger capacity.

The Model Y L carries over the five-star safety rating achieved by the standard Model Y in 2025 testing by ANCAP.
Safety scores include:
- Adult occupant protection: 91%
- Child occupant protection: 95%
- Vulnerable road user protection: 86%
- Safety assist: 92%

Zecar’s Take
The Model Y L represents a significant step forward for Australia’s evolving EV market.
Affordable three row electric SUVs have been limited, often priced well above ninety thousand dollars. By offering a six seat layout, long driving range and strong performance at under seventy five thousand dollars, Tesla is targeting a clear gap.
For Australian families, this could become one of the first genuinely practical electric SUVs that balances space, range and everyday usability - all at an accessible price point.
It also puts pressure on competing brands to accelerate plans for more accessible three row EVs, a segment that is only just beginning to gain traction locally.
