Key Points

  • Tesla has opened Australian orders for the six-seat Model Y L electric SUV.
  • Pricing starts at $74,900 before on-road costs.
  • The dual-motor AWD powertrain produces 378kW and 590Nm.
  • Driving range is rated at 681km on the WLTP cycle.
  • The extended body adds third-row seating and up to 2423L of cargo space.

The expanded Tesla Model Y L has officially launched in Australia, bringing a larger three-row electric SUV option to buyers who want more space than the standard Tesla Model Y.

Orders are now open for the new six-seat version, with deliveries expected to begin between April and June 2026.

Priced from $74,900 before on-road costs, the Model Y L arrives as the only variant in the lineup – the Premium AWD – and sits around $6,000 above the Model Y Premium Long Range AWD.

For Tesla, the new model effectively reintroduces a three-row electric SUV to its Australian range, targeting families that want extra seating without stepping up to a much larger and more expensive vehicle.

A larger Model Y built for families

The Model Y L is based on the standard Model Y platform but features a stretched body and extended wheelbase to accommodate a third row of seats.

Compared with the regular Model Y, the new version is:

  • 177mm longer
  • 44mm taller
  • 150mm longer in wheelbase

Inside, Tesla has redesigned the seating layout. The second-row bench has been replaced with two individual captain’s chairs, which provide easier access to the third row and offer additional comfort.

These second-row seats include:

  • Heating and ventilation
  • Power adjustment
  • Retractable armrests
  • ISOFIX and top-tether child seat anchor points

The third row adds two additional seats, each equipped with:

  • Heating
  • USB-C charging outlets
  • Air vents
  • ISOFIX and top-tether child seat mounting points

Both rear rows can be folded electrically to create a flat cargo floor.

Zecar’s Take

The arrival of the Model Y L highlights how quickly Australia’s electric SUV segment is evolving.

Three-row electric SUVs remain relatively rare below the $100,000 mark. The Model Y L currently competes with models such as the Mercedes-Benz EQB and Kia EV9, both of which start significantly higher in price.

By offering six seats, long driving range and strong performance at under $75,000, Tesla could attract families that previously had limited options in the EV market.s

The move may also pressure other manufacturers to bring more affordable three-row electric SUVs to Australia as demand continues to grow.

Given the strong sales performance of the standard Model Y – already one of Australia’s best-selling EVs – the larger Model Y L could quickly become a key player in the expanding family-focused electric vehicle segment.
