Model Y L receives approval for Australia
Documentation previously lodged in Australia’s vehicle certification database confirmed the Model Y L has received ADR approval, clearing the way for local sales.
The filings reveal several key details about the extended-wheelbase EV:
- All-wheel drive powertrain
- 88.2kWh battery pack
- Likely sourced from LG Energy Solution using Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) chemistry
This battery configuration is currently used in Model Y vehicles produced at Tesla’s Shanghai factory, which supplies right-hand-drive markets including Australia.
European certification documents also suggest the larger Model Y L could deliver up to 681km of range on 19-inch wheels, though Australian testing figures will be confirmed closer to launch.

A bigger, more family-friendly Model Y
The Model Y L has been designed to offer greater practicality compared with the standard five-seat Model Y.
The biggest difference is its three-row seating layout, which includes:
- Two “captain’s chairs” in the second row
- Two seats in the third row
The second-row seats feature retractable armrests that can be controlled using a rear-seat display or seat-mounted controls, creating easier access to the third row.
Passengers in the third row also benefit from cup holders and additional storage, making the layout more usable for families.
Another key change is the vehicle’s extended wheelbase, which is 186mm longer than the standard Model Y. This pushes the overall length to nearly five metres, helping to create significantly more cabin space.
With the second and third rows folded, the Model Y L offers over 2,500 litres of cargo capacity, placing it among the most practical electric SUVs in its class.
What it means for Tesla and Australia’s EV market
The arrival of the Model Y L could strengthen Tesla’s position in Australia’s rapidly growing electric SUV segment.
The standard Model Y has already become one of the country’s best-selling EVs, competing with models such as the BYD Atto 3, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
By introducing a larger six-seat version, Tesla could attract buyers who want:
- A family-friendly electric SUV
- More interior space and practicality
- The ability to carry six passengers comfortably
If priced competitively, the Model Y L could also challenge larger three-row SUVs entering the EV market over the next few years.
For Australian buyers, the model could fill a gap between compact electric SUVs and much larger premium electric vehicles.
With vehicles already spotted locally, Tesla’s biggest Model Y variant could be only months away from arriving in Australian showrooms.
