Comments

BYD is set further expand its Australian EV line up with the arrival of the Sealion 7 in late 2024. Known as the Sea lion 07 in China, this mid-size SUV will go head-to-head with the popular Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5, offering a larger and potentially more powerful and larger alternative to BYD's existing Atto 3.

Details are still emerging, but overseas data indicates the Sealion 7 will boast similar dimensions to the Model Y and come with three powertrain options in China, including a performance variant exceeding 390kW. Driving range estimates vary depending on the variant, with figures between 550km and 610km based on the Chinese CLTC cycle.

The Sealion 7 will leverage BYD's e-platform 3.0 architecture and integrate the BYD Blade battery technology for enhanced rigidity and safety. Battery capacities of 71.8kWh and 80.64kWh are expected to be on offer.

While Chinese market pricing hints at a potentially lower price point to the Tesla Model Y (from $55.900 plus on-road costs) , official Australian pricing and detailed specifications will be revealed closer to launch. The price point will be a key factor for buyers when choosing between a Sealion 7 and the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5.
