- BYD is developing a new flagship three row SUV larger than the Sealion 8
- Both electric and plug in hybrid powertrains are likely options
- Launch timing in China has shifted to the second quarter of 2026
- Australian arrival is unconfirmed but would complement BYD’s expanding SUV line
BYD seems to have no intention of slowing down. After filling showrooms with small and mid-size electric SUVs, the company is now preparing something far grander. A new three row SUV is on the way, aimed squarely at families, business buyers and anyone who looks at a Sealion 8 and thinks it is not quite enough car.
This upcoming model is known internally as Dynasty D. It is not part of the premium Denza line, but insiders say it will feel every bit as luxurious. BYD wants it to be the halo SUV for the entire brand, a vehicle that pushes size, comfort and technology far beyond anything it currently offers.

A Massive Step Up in Size
The numbers alone make it clear that BYD is chasing the top end of the large SUV segment. The new SUV is expected to stretch past 5.2 metres. That makes it longer than the Sealion 8 and bigger than key competitors such as the Hyundai Palisade. It even grows close to the footprint of high end luxury SUVs like the BMW X7.
The concept version shown at the 2025 Shanghai motor show made a strong first impression. Its cabin combined bamboo, gold leaf accents and a multi screen infotainment layout. The design language looked polished and surprisingly close to production.

Power Options Still Under Wraps
BYD has not detailed the powertrain, though two paths appear likely. The first is a fully electric version. The second is a plug in hybrid variant that could use the company’s latest DM 5.0 system. That hybrid setup teams a 1.5 litre petrol engine with dual electric motors and reports from China suggest an electric only range of up to 200 kilometres.
This flexibility would allow BYD to compete in markets where charging infrastructure is still developing, while still offering a long range EV option for drivers who want to avoid petrol altogether.

Launch Timing Moves Back
Originally targeted for late 2025, the new flagship will now enter the Chinese market between April and June of 2026. BYD has delayed the launch to refine the vehicle as the competition in China’s high end SUV space intensifies.
The production version will sit within BYD’s Dynasty Series, the line that emphasises premium fit and finish compared with the more youth focused Ocean range.
A Luxurious Cabin For Six or Seven
Customers will be able to choose between six and seven seat configurations. The six seat version is aimed at business buyers and is expected to feature second row captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, massage and a recline function designed to mimic zero gravity seating. Families shopping for space rather than executive comfort will likely gravitate toward the seven seat layout.
What It Means for Australia
BYD has not confirmed whether this new flagship will come to Australia. Yet the brand has been steadily building its presence locally, with the Atto 2, Atto 3 and Sealion 7 already on sale. The Sealion 6 PHEV is due soon, followed by the Sealion 5 and Sealion 8. Given that Australia is one of BYD’s fastest growing international markets, it would not be surprising to see the Dynasty D arrive as a road focused alternative to the rugged Denza models.
For now the message is simple. BYD wants a true flagship, and it is shaping up to be huge.
