Key Points

  • Arcfox T1 launches in New Zealand from mid-June 2026, priced from NZ$34,990
  • The T1 is a compact crossover with LFP battery and over 300km WLTP range
  • Australia could be next, as EV models launched in New Zealand typically follow across the Tasman

A new Chinese EV brand is about to arrive in New Zealand, and Australia may not be far behind. As first reported by AutoTrader, Arcfox, the premium electric vehicle arm of BAIC Group, will launch in New Zealand next month. Leading the charge is the T1, a compact crossover aimed at urban drivers.

The pattern is well established. EV models that launch in New Zealand tend to follow in Australia. If Arcfox follows that path, Australian buyers could see the T1 arrive in the near future.

What is Arcfox?

Arcfox was founded in 2017 as the premium EV brand within BAIC Group, one of China's largest state-owned automakers. Despite being less than a decade old, it has grown to become BAIC's leading EV marque. The brand is built around technology partnerships and a strong research and development focus in the new energy vehicle space.

In New Zealand, Arcfox will be distributed by Auto Distribution Holdings, part of the Armstrong Group portfolio, which began its national presence in March 2026.

BAIC Group may already be familiar to Australian drivers in a roundabout way. BAIC is the joint venture partner of Hyundai in China, where the two companies co-produce vehicles under the Beijing Hyundai banner. That partnership has contributed to models like the Hyundai Elexio, which is currently on sale in Australia.

The Arcfox T1: what you need to know

The T1 is a compact crossover with a raised ride height and an urban focus. It sits in the space between a regular hatchback and a small SUV, offering more interior space and comfort than a typical city car. It will compete directly against the BYD Atto 1 and the Geely EX2 in the compact EV segment.

Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a claimed range of more than 300km on the WLTP cycle. LFP chemistry is known for its safety, longevity, and lower cost compared to other battery types.

The T1 comes with a full safety suite. This includes front, side, and curtain airbags, plus a range of driver assistance systems: Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Simon Rutherford, CEO of Auto Distribution Holdings, says the T1 will offer features and attributes usually expected of a much more expensive car.

Pricing: NZ and what to expect in Australia

In New Zealand, the T1 will launch at NZ$34,990 for a limited time, a saving of NZ$2,000 off the regular RRP of NZ$36,990.

If the T1 were to launch in Australia, pricing would likely land somewhere between AU$30,000 and AU$32,000 before on-road costs, based on the NZ pricing and typical currency conversion. That would place it in direct competition with the BYD Atto 1 and the Geely EX2, both of which target the affordable compact EV buyer.

No Australian pricing or launch date has been confirmed. These figures are estimates only.

A sodium-ion battery could follow

There is more to the T1 story than its launch spec. BAIC has announced that the T1 is expected to be the first vehicle in its lineup to receive a new sodium-ion battery.

BAIC's research division says it has completed development of a sodium-ion battery using a prismatic cell format with an energy density of 170Wh/kg. It supports 4C fast charging, which means a minimum of 360kW, with a full charge completed in just 11 minutes.

The battery is also designed for extreme temperatures, operating from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, with energy retention above 92 percent at minus 20 degrees Celsius. BAIC also claims it passed safety tests including an overcharge condition of up to 200 percent without fire or explosion.

Sodium-ion batteries use fewer raw materials than lithium-ion alternatives and are considered a safer, more cost-effective option. BAIC is not alone in this space. Changan and CATL have also announced plans for a sodium-ion battery-powered EV, targeting a range of over 400km from a 45kWh battery.

BAIC also produces lithium-ion and solid-state batteries under its Aurora Battery programme, so the sodium-ion unit is part of a broader technology push.

What this means for Australia

New Zealand has become a testing ground for EV brands entering the Australasian market. Models that prove themselves there often follow in Australia within months. Arcfox has not confirmed any Australian plans, but the distributor's comments about meeting consumer demand for affordable EVs suggest the brand has broader ambitions.

Rutherford cited rising petrol prices and growing consumer interest in EVs as key drivers behind the launch timing. Those same factors apply equally in Australia.

More Arcfox models are expected to follow the T1 in New Zealand as the brand builds its local presence. If Australia is on the roadmap, an announcement should come later in 2026.
