The Tesla Model Y has been Australia's best-selling electric car for three years running. The Zeekr 7X wants to take that crown, and it undercuts the Model Y on price while beating it on range and charging speed.

Both are mid-size electric SUVs aimed at the same buyer. The Tesla Model Y RWD starts at $58,900 before on-road costs. The Zeekr 7X RWD starts at $57,900 before on-road costs, a $1,000 difference. Once you look past the sticker price, the gap between the two cars widens considerably on battery size, charging speed and equipment.

The Model Y RWD comes standard with 19-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof and Tesla's Basic Autopilot suite, covering adaptive cruise and lane keeping. The 7X RWD matches it with 19-inch alloys but adds tri-zone climate control and Zeekr's standard ADAS package, including AEB, blind-spot monitoring and front and rear cross-traffic alert.

Stepping up a tier, the gap widens. The Zeekr 7X Long Range RWD costs $63,900, which is $5,000 less than the Tesla Model Y Premium Long Range AWD at $68,900, and adds a substantially bigger battery for the money. At the top end, the 7X Performance AWD at $72,900 undercuts the Model Y Performance AWD by $16,500, while offering more power (470kW vs 461kW) and a higher rated towing capacity.

Paint colours and interior trim are the main options on both ranges. Tesla charges extra for non-white paint, while Zeekr's RWD variants use PU leather-style upholstery as standard, with genuine Nappa leather reserved for the AWD Performance model.

The Model Y is wider than the 7X by 52mm, despite the 7X's coupe SUV styling suggesting a sportier, narrower stance. The 7X is 26mm taller and has a 10mm longer wheelbase, while the Model Y is 3mm longer overall. None of these differences are large enough to affect garage fit or street parking for most buyers.

The 7X's tighter 11.6m turning circle, against the Model Y's 12m, will be more noticeable in tight multi-storey car parks and U-turns than the dimensional differences above. Both cars have similar ground clearance, with the 7X just 5mm higher off the ground.

The Zeekr 7X RWD beats the Model Y RWD on range despite carrying a heavier kerb weight. The 7X weighs 47kg more than the Model Y, 2,050kg against 2,003kg, but still returns 14km more WLTP range, a result of its larger 71kWh usable battery against the Model Y's 60kWh pack.

Towing is a clear win for the 7X, rated to pull 2,000kg braked against the Model Y's 1,600kg, a 400kg gap that matters if you're planning to tow a caravan, boat or trailer regularly. Both cars share the same 750kg unbraked rating.

The 7X RWD's biggest advantage over the Model Y RWD is charging speed, on both AC and DC. Zeekr's 22kW onboard AC charger takes the 71kWh battery from 0-100% in 3 hours 48 minutes. The Model Y RWD's 11kW AC charger needs 7 hours for a smaller 60kWh battery. On DC, Tesla rates the Model Y RWD at up to 175kW, while Zeekr's 800V architecture allows the 7X to accept up to 450kW, though Australia's public DC network currently tops out around 350kW in most locations.

Vehicle-to-load is a clear win for the 7X. It comes with V2L as standard, rated to 3.3kW, enough to run camping gear, power tools or a fridge during an outage. The Model Y RWD does not offer V2L, the Model Y L does offer V2L.

Model Y Charging

Driver Technology

Both cars run a comparable Level 2 driver assistance suite, with different branding.

Both cars come standard with a comparable suite of Level 2 driver assistance features: adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and front and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Model Y RWD runs Tesla's Basic Autopilot, covering Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. Tesla's more capable Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) packages are optional extras on top of this.

The Zeekr 7X RWD runs Zeekr's standard ADAS suite, built around 12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and radar. Neither car offers hands-free or eyes-off driving in Australia. Both require the driver to keep hands on the wheel and stay alert at all times.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 7X RWD supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which the Model Y does not.

Both cars centre their cabin around a single large touchscreen and drop physical buttons in favour of on-screen controls.

The Model Y RWD uses Tesla's in-house infotainment system on a central display, with no separate instrument cluster. Tesla does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in any Model Y variant. The 7X RWD runs a 16-inch touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip, paired with a separate digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. The 7X supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Both vehicles support over-the-air software updates and companion smartphone apps for remote vehicle functions.
