Zeekr 7X to Take on Tesla Model Y in Australia from Late 2025

Comments

The battle for dominance in Australia’s electric SUV market is about to heat up, with Zeekr confirming that its highly anticipated 7X will arrive in the third quarter of 2025. In Australia it will join the X (small SUV) and 009 (people-movr). With a blend of luxury, technology, and competitive pricing, this mid-size EV aims to challenge the best-selling Tesla Model Y head-on.

A New Contender in the Mid-Size EV SUV Market

Zeekr, the premium electric brand under the Geely umbrella, has been making waves globally, and the 7X is set to be its biggest play in Australia yet. Expected to be priced around $70,000, the 7X will take on not just the Tesla Model Y, which currently sits between $60,000 and $70,000, but also pricier rivals like the BMW iX3 and Polestar 4.

Zeekr isn’t just banking on price alone, though. The 7X promises an upmarket experience with air suspension, a tech-laden luxury cabin, and a distinctive LED lighting system integrated into the front bumper. This light bar even allows for customisable messaging, though whether this feature will comply with Australian road regulations remains to be seen.

Zeekr’s Big Plans for Australia

Speaking at the recent Everything Electric show in Sydney, Zeekr’s global marketing boss FrankLi highlighted the significance of the 7X in the company’s expansion strategy.

“So this year, we currently only have two models, the X and 009, and the 7X will come in late this year,” said Li. “For this year, our target is to reach 3,000 sales, and for next year, we’re targeting 10,000 because we will have a full year of these three models.”

That’s an ambitious goal, but given Australia’s growing appetite for premium EVs, it’s not unrealistic. The Tesla Model Y is currently Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle, and Zeekr believes the 7X could capture a solid chunk of the market.

“We strongly believe that 7X will bring a lot of volume for us,” Li added.

Positioning and Pricing: A Premium Alternative to Model Y

While final pricing hasn’t been locked in, Li indicated that the 7X may come at a slight premium over the Model Y.

“This [price] hasn’t been decided yet,” he explained. “It’s going to arrive in Australia in Q3. So we may launch this product around July or August to the media before it arrives for customer deliveries. At that time, the price will be finalised.”

When pressed on whether the 7X would be cheaper than Tesla’s offering, Li was measured in his response: “I think globally, the price positioning will be a little bit higher than Model Y. But it depends on how things evolve until that time. Because, you know, Model Y prices go up and down.”

Packed with Features to Justify the Price Tag

Zeekr is confident that the 7X will justify its price tag by offering a more premium package than the Model Y. Li emphasised that the vehicle will come with high-end features as standard, rather than as costly add-ons.

“So actually, for this one, every feature is higher than Model Y – with ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), with air suspension, with seat ventilation, it’s almost everything,” Li said. “The light bar on the front, you can code whatever you want.”

It’s clear that Zeekr is targeting buyers who prioritise advanced tech and comfort over just affordability. While ultra-budget EVs from brands like GWM and BYD haven’t yet taken Australia by storm, EVs in the $40,000 to $60,000 range are currently the sweet spot for local buyers. If Zeekr can convince customers that the extra spend is worth it, the 7X could carve out a strong position in the market.

More Dealerships, More Zeekrs on the Road

To support the 7X launch, Zeekr plans to expand its dealer network across Australia’s major cities. Customer deliveries are expected to begin in September 2025, giving the brand a full year to push towards its ambitious 10,000-unit sales target for 2026.

With Tesla’s Model Y reigning supreme and other EV challengers like the Polestar 4 in the mix, Zeekr is facing an uphill battle. But with premium features, striking design, and a competitive price point, the 7X is shaping up to be a serious contender in Australia’s rapidly evolving EV market.

Will it be enough to shake Tesla’s grip on the mid-size electric SUV segment? We’ll find out in 2025.
