  • Australia targeted for strong EV demand and tariff-free access
  • Global expansion to reach 40 markets by year’s end

Chinese electric vehicle brand Nio is preparing to enter the Australian and New Zealand markets later this year. This marks an expansion into right-hand-drive territories as competition intensifies across the local EV landscape.

The move is expected to occur in the second half of 2026 and will see Australia and New Zealand join a growing list of international markets targeted by the Shanghai-based automaker as it looks beyond China for long-term growth.

Firefly set to lead the charge

Rather than launching with its larger, premium models, Nio will use its Firefly sub-brand as the spearhead for its expansion into Australia and New Zealand. Firefly has been positioned as a compact, urban-focused electric vehicle designed to appeal to global buyers seeking premium design at a lower entry price point.

According to Nio executives, Firefly is better suited to overseas markets where compact dimensions, efficiency and competitive pricing are critical to gaining early traction.

Key points about Firefly’s global role include:

  • Firefly is Nio’s first dedicated global expansion brand
  • The model is designed specifically for urban commuting
  • It targets markets without punitive tariffs on Chinese EVs
  • Right-hand-drive production is already underway

The Firefly EV is also Nio’s first right-hand-drive vehicle, a milestone that underpins its ambitions in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Southeast Asia.

Right-hand-drive markets in sharp focus

Australia and New Zealand sit at the centre of Nio’s next growth phase due to their right-hand-drive requirements, which differ from major left-hand-drive markets such as China, Europe and the United States.

Nio has already begun showcasing the right-hand-drive Firefly EV at the Singapore motor show, with sales in Singapore scheduled to begin around the 2026 Chinese New Year. Deliveries of the left-hand-drive version have already commenced in Europe, giving the company real-world market feedback ahead of its Antipodean launch.

Other right-hand-drive markets in Nio’s near-term plans include:

  • Thailand, with Firefly launching in March
  • The United Kingdom, targeted for entry in 2026
  • Singapore, which becomes Firefly’s first RHD sales market

Nio has confirmed mass production of the right-hand-drive Firefly began in November 2025, with the first batch already shipped to Singapore.

A cautious but ambitious expansion strategy

Despite its global ambitions, Nio has stressed it will only enter markets where commercial viability can be assured. Founder and CEO William Li has described Firefly as the ideal testbed, capable of achieving sustainable volumes without exposing the brand to excessive financial risk.

This measured approach comes as Nio celebrates the production of its one-millionth vehicle, a symbolic milestone reached while the company continues to prioritise its domestic Chinese market alongside gradual international growth.

Nio’s longer-term goal is expansive. The company aims to operate in 40 countries and regions by the end of the year, using Firefly as a trailblazer before introducing additional models where demand supports it.

For Australian and New Zealand buyers, Nio’s arrival signals another serious contender entering an already crowded EV market, with compact premium electric cars likely to become one of the most fiercely contested segments over the next few years.
