Mercedes-Benz has revealed an updated EQS Sedan for Australia, introducing a new 800-volt electrical architecture, a two-speed rear transmission and steer-by-wire steering as a factory option. The EQS 400 Sedan goes on sale in Australia from 10 September 2026, priced from $184,900 MRLP.
Mercedes-Benz says more than a quarter of the vehicle's components are newly developed, updated or refined. The update lifts the EQS 400's WLTP-tested driving range to 810km, adds faster DC charging and introduces steer-by-wire technology, a first for a German-built series production car.
Battery, range and charging
The EQS 400 now runs a 112kWh usable battery, achieved through a new battery chemistry that blends silicon oxide with graphite, resulting in a n increase in WLTP-tested range to 810km.
A new 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 350kW. Under optimal conditions, and connected to a compatible high-power DC charger, the EQS 400 can add up to 320km of WLTP-tested range in around 10 minutes. The car can also charge at up to 175kW on 400-volt DC stations.
The rear-mounted electric motor produces 270kW and 505Nm, giving a 0-100km/h time of 6.2 seconds.
Steer-by-wire technology
For the first time in a series-production, German-manufactured vehicle, the EQS can be optioned with steer-by-wire technology. The system replaces the mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels with electronic control, which Mercedes-Benz says improves precision and manoeuvrability while reducing steering effort.
It pairs with a flatter, yoke-style steering wheel, giving occupants a clearer view of the driver display and easier entry and exit. Combined with rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees, steer-by-wire sharpens low-speed agility while Mercedes-Benz says it keeps the car stable at higher speeds.
Buyers who prefer a conventional setup can stick with the standard electromechanical steering, which brings back Mercedes-Benz's familiar rocker-and-roller steering wheel controls in response to customer feedback.
Exterior design
The new EQS 400 keeps its coupe-like silhouette but gets a more upright front end. A reshaped bonnet with pronounced power domes, a redesigned front apron and an illuminated star-pattern grille with chrome accents bring the look closer to the S-Class.
At the rear, a full-width light strip with new helix elements and a redesigned AMG-style bumper with more prominent diffuser ribs and a full-width chrome accent round out the update.
Buyers can choose between the standard Electric Art Line, which pairs the bonnet star with a black grille and chrome slats, or the optional AMG Line, which adds high-gloss black detailing and chrome highlights for a sportier look.
Standard equipment includes 21-inch black multi-spoke wheels with a high-sheen finish, DIGITAL LIGHT headlights and a panoramic sliding sunroof.
Cabin and technology
The EQS 400 is the first Mercedes-Benz model built on the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS. The system controls the car and supports continuous over-the-air updates. The next-generation MBUX Virtual Assistant handles voice commands using AI, including technology from Microsoft, and stays connected to the cloud.
The MBUX Hyperscreen returns, with three displays merging beneath a single glass surface spanning more than 55 inches. The MBUX Zero Layer surfaces the most relevant information and recommendations automatically, and users can group apps into self-named folders, similar to a smartphone.
Rear passengers get heated, electrically adjustable seats, luxury head restraints, comfort armrests and wireless charging as standard. Buyers can option two MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment screens with wireless headphones.
A HEPA filtration system removes up to 99.65 per cent of airborne particles, and the standard Acoustic Comfort Package cuts road noise. Sound comes from a standard Burmester 3D surround system with 15 speakers, 710 watts of output and Dolby Atmos support.
New optional front heated seatbelts warm to up to 44 degrees Celsius. Standard four-zone THERMOTRONIC climate control lets each occupant set their own temperature and airflow.
Safety, lighting and ride technology
The EQS 400 comes standard with the latest DIGITAL LIGHT system, using micro-LED technology for a lighting field around 40 per cent larger than before while using up to 50 per cent less energy. Its ULTRA RANGE high beam reaches up to 600 metres, and cornering lights adjust based on camera and map data.
A new driver assistance system draws on 27 sensors. Standard functions include Blind Spot Assist Plus, Lane Keeping Assist, speed limit warning, Brake Assist, emergency stop, evasive steering, Exit Warning, Manoeuvring Assist and a reversing camera. MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST can identify parking spaces, including diagonal spots, and manoeuvre the car automatically at speeds of up to 5km/h.
Standard AIRMATIC air suspension uses cloud-connected Car-to-X data to prepare for road conditions ahead, such as speed bumps, before the car reaches them. Mercedes-Benz says this helps maintain ride comfort and body control.
The EQS also keeps its aerodynamic focus, with a drag coefficient from as low as 0.20Cd, helped by refined exterior mirrors that also cut wind noise at speed.
