Geely EX2 Goes Global: Could This Be Australia’s Next Budget EV?

Geely has confirmed that its compact and affordable EX2 electric hatchback will launch across five continents within the next year, with strong indications that Australia will be part of the rollout.

The EX2, known as "Xingyuan" in China, was the best-selling model in the Chinese market from January to September 2025.

If it arrives, the EX2 could shake up the entry-level EV market by offering one of the most affordable all-electric options for local buyers. With electric vehicle demand rising and competition tightening in the sub-$40,000 segment, Geely appears ready to target drivers who value practicality,m efficiency, and price in equal measure.

A Global Push with Local Promise

In its official release, Geely stated that the EX2 “is scheduled to launch in markets across five continents within one year,” highlighting right-hand-drive regions such as Thailand. This makes an Australian debut a logical next step for the brand.

Geely Australia has yet to confirm local timing, but if the EX2 lands here, it will join the EX5 electric SUV and Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid already in showrooms. Its compact footprint and low pricing could position it against rivals such as the BYD Atto 1 ($23,990), GWM Ora ($35,990 drive-away), and MG4 ($37,990 drive-away), all popular among first-time EV buyers looking for value.

Compact Size, Practical Range

Built on Geely’s modular GEA platform, the EX2 is roughly the size of a Mazda 2 hatchback, measuring:

  • 4,135mm in length
  • 1,805mm in width
  • 1,580mm in height
  • 2,650mm wheelbase

Under the skin, the international version uses an 85kW motor paired with a 40.16kWh battery driving the rear wheels. It offers:

  • An estimated 340km WLTP range
  • Energy consumption of 11.8kWh/100km
  • 30–80 percent DC fast charging in about 25 minutes
  • Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality for powering external devices

In China, a smaller 58kW version with a 30.12kWh battery is also available, though Australian availability remains unconfirmed.

Designed for Urban Simplicity

Despite its compact size, Geely says the EX2’s cabin “surpasses expectations in the compact SUV segment.” The flat floor design enhances legroom, while a 70-litre front trunk and a 375-litre rear boot (expanding to 1,320 litres with the seats folded) make it surprisingly practical for its size.

Expected features include:

  • 14.6-inch central touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital cluster
  • Wireless phone charging (15W)
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • 256-colour ambient lighting
  • Power tailgate and 16-inch alloy wheels

Buyers will likely be offered five exterior colour options and two interior themes, giving the EX2 a contemporary, premium-inspired feel.
