BYD has launched the second-generation Seagull in China, with prices starting at 65,900 yuan (about A$14,000). The hatchback, sold in Australia as the BYD Atto 1, is bigger, seats five and adds BYD's second-generation Blade Battery technology with flash charging. An optional LiDAR driver assist system is also available.

Australian buyers should not expect this version soon. The Atto 1 only launched here at the end of 2025, and two of the new model's headline features, BYD's God's Eye driver assist system and flash charging, are not yet supported in Australia.

Flash Charging on the New Seagull

The Seagull is BYD's most affordable flash-charging EV which is capable of over 1MW charge speeds. Charge times were not confirmed in the press release but BYD claims its Blade Battery 2.0 can charge from 10 to 97 per cent in about nine minutes on a compatible flash charger. Whether the Seagull's smaller battery packs match that figure is unconfirmed.

God's Eye Driver Assist and Safety

The optional DiPilot 300 system, branded God's Eye, is LiDAR-based. According to the launch details, it enables City Navigation on Autopilot, High-speed Navigation on Autopilot, traffic light recognition with countdowns and full-scenario obstacle avoidance.

On safety, BYD lists a "ten-horizontal, four-vertical" cage-style body structure, up to six airbags and a tyre blowout stabilisation system.

Will the New Seagull Come to Australia?

Not any time soon, in Zecar's view. BYD has not announced this version for Australia. The current Atto 1 only launched here at the end of 2025, so a replacement is unlikely to arrive soon.

Two of the new model's key features are also not yet supported in Australia. These are BYD's God's Eye driver assist system and flash charging. Zecar reported in May that BYD's Denza brand planned to begin installing flash chargers at Australian dealerships from October 2026, starting with three dealerships. It appears these plans will likely be delayed as there has been no official announcement in Australia yet of what would be the fastest charging station in Australia.

For now, the Atto 1 on sale here is the first-generation model. BYD is offering the Atto 1 Essential at $19,990 driveaway for orders until 15 December 2026, which makes it Australia's cheapest new car.
