BYD Launching 1,000 kW Ultra-Fast Chargers in April

Comments

BYD is walking the talk with the imminent launch of its market leading charging technology. The Chinese automaker is set to roll out its first batch of 1,000 kW ultra-fast chargers in early April, and for those of us keeping an eye on the future of electric mobility, this is a huge deal.

For context, these chargers, officially named the “Megawatt Flash Charger”, can add an astonishing 400 km of range in just five minutes. To put that into perspective, that’s twice as fast as Tesla’s latest V4 Supercharger, which maxes out at 500 kW.

Breaking Down BYD’s 1MW Charging Tech

Here’s what makes these chargers revolutionary:

  • Unmatched Power – The first EV charger in the world capable of handling both 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps.
  • Insanely Fast Charging – Adds 2 km of range per second, meaning an EV can be road-trip-ready in minutes.
  • Energy Storage Integration – Even areas with weaker power grids can still deliver the full 1,000 kW, thanks to BYD’s built-in energy storage tech.
  • Super e-Platform Compatibility – This charger is part of BYD’s new Super e-Platform, which also includes cutting-edge motor and battery technology.
  • Real-World Deployment – The first 500 units go live in April, with a goal of 4,000 stations in China.

BYD’s Game Plan: Rolling Out the Future

BYD isn’t just talking big; they’re acting fast. While most automakers unveil tech years before deployment (Tesla for example), BYD is pushing 500 of these chargers live within weeks. That’s a massive statement of intent.

Li Yunfei, BYD’s General Manager of Branding, made it clear: “Some people still don’t believe it or have doubts. But BYD’s style has always been mass production as soon as it is released.”

In other words, while competitors are still mapping out their charging strategies, BYD is already making it a reality.

The Cars Built for 1MW Charging

So, which EVs can actually take advantage of this next-gen charging? Meet the BYD Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, two flagship models that have just opened for pre-orders in China. These EVs aren’t just fast to charge—they’re outright performance beasts.

  • Over 1,000 hp (580 kW) – Supercar-level acceleration.
  • 0-100 km/h in under 3 seconds – Porsche Taycan Turbo S territory.
  • 10C Battery Charging Rate – A first for consumer EVs.
  • 1,000V System – Enabling that insane 1MW charging speed.

And here’s something even wilder: these cars can charge with two plugs simultaneously, speeding up the process even further. While this may seem like overkill today, it’s a glimpse into where EV tech is headed.

What This Means for Australia

While these 1MW chargers are rolling out in China first, it may be some time before we start seeing them in other markets including Australia.

Australia's grid would require significant investment if it is to support anywhere near 1MW charging for consumer EVs. By way of example, the fastest chargers in Australia today max out at 360 kW.

If these chargers were supported by large, powerful batteries, it is possible that these could start appearing in Australia eventually.

While the technology BYD could play a big role in eliminating the biggest obstacles of EV uptake: lack of charging and range anxiety, the implementation of this in Australia won't be straight forwward.
