An EV Direct spokesperson has just confirmed to me that BYD is aiming to soon test a retrofit charging harness that could enable Australian 2023 model BYD Atto 3 EVs to work with Tesla V3/V4 Superchargers.

History

For readers who are unaware of the background to this situation this is a brief summary.

When owners of 2023 BYD Atto 3 and 2023 BYD Seal electric cars first tried to use them at open access Tesla Superchargers, they discovered that their cars wouldn't work at any of Tesla V3/V4 charger location.

Eventually EV Direct the distributor for BYD in Australia figured out a solution for 2023 BYD Seal electric cars and the hardware change was made for no extra cost during regularly scheduled BYD Seal service visits.

In the meanwhile many Australian 2023 BYD Atto 3 owners have been frustrated that their cars hadn't been fixed yet.

New Information

I am sharing a message below sent a few days ago from a EV Direct staff member to Kevin an Admin of BYD EV Owners Australia.

I have confirmed with EV Direct that the message is real and the quote is correct. I have removed the EV Direct staff members name for privacy.

"Thanks for your patience. I’d like to provide some clarity - the issue you’re experiencing is not related to a CCS (DC Fast Charging) fault".
"If you have any concerns about your vehicle’s CCS functionality, please contact your nearest service centre, and they will be happy to assist. At BYD, we take pride in our battery technology leadership and are committed to ensuring broad charging compatibility".
"To address access to Tesla V3/V4 chargers and enhance charging flexibility, BYD has developed a retrofit charging harness".

"We expect it to arrive in Australia within the next 30 days, after which it will undergo thorough testing and validation".
"Once we are confident it meets our high standards, we will make it available for customers who require it".
"This will be an optional upgrade, and while we are still finalising pricing, we are working to keep the cost as low as possible".
"The Extended Range harness will be available first, with the Standard Range version arriving shortly after".
"We appreciate your patience and will keep you updated as soon as testing is complete".

BYD Owners Respond

The response from Australian 2023 BYD Atto 3 owners to learning this new information has been mixed.

Some are happy to pay for a retrofit charging harness if it means they can access Tesla Superchargers.

Others are upset because they are being expected to pay for this when 2023 BYD Seal owners got their hardware fix for free during scheduled service visits, which enabled them to use Tesla Superchargers.

A third group want their 2023 BYD Atto 3 fixed for free as soon as the solution is available, as a free warranty fix.

If you're a 2023 BYD Atto 3 owner how do you feel about the situation?

One reader has asked what about BYD ATTO 3 sold in late 2022? My understanding is that these cars are exactly the same as 2023 model BYD Atto 3.
