AGL kerbside EV charger

Key Points

  • AGL's 150+ Sydney kerbside chargers now accessible via Chargefox app
  • Chargers range from 7kW to 22kW, ideal for residents without home charging
  • Partnership exposes chargers to over 300,000 Chargefox users

EV drivers in Sydney can now access AGL's kerbside charging network through the Chargefox app. The partnership brings over 150 pole-mounted chargers into Australia's most popular EV charging platform.

The integration means Chargefox users can locate, start, and pay for charging sessions at AGL sites without needing a separate app or account.

What This Means for EV Drivers

AGL's kerbside chargers are designed for people who can't install home charging. The pole-mounted units sit on street corners across Sydney, offering convenient charging while shopping, working, or running errands.

Ed Asuncion, Executive General Manager of Chargefox, said kerbside charging is critical for providing convenient charging across Australia with a secure experience.

The chargers range in speed from 7kW to 22kW. These are slower than fast chargers but work well for longer stops where cars can charge for several hours.

How the Partnership Works

Chargefox users can now see AGL charging locations in the app alongside 2000+ charging stations on the Chargefox platform. The app shows real-time availability, pricing, and navigation to each site.

Payment happens through the Chargefox app or RFID cards. Users don't need to download AGL's app or create a separate account.

Mabelle Reyes, AGL's Head of E-Mobility, said the company recognises not everyone can install home chargers. By providing over 150 public chargers around Sydney, AGL aims to improve access to reliable charging. Partnering with Chargefox extends the reach of these chargers.

Why This Matters

The partnership addresses a key challenge in EV adoption: charging infrastructure for people without off-street parking. Many apartment dwellers and renters can't install home chargers, making public charging their primary option.

Making AGL's chargers available on Chargefox exposes them to over 300,000 EV drivers. More users means more revenue for charger owners, which encourages investment in additional infrastructure.

Rebecca Stenhouse, CEO of Australian Motoring Services (which operates Chargefox), said the goal is building a future where all public EV chargers are available to all drivers on one platform. This eliminates the need for multiple apps.

zecar's take

Australia's EV charging network has expanded quickly, but fragmentation continues to frustrate drivers who must navigate up to a dozen apps to access different networks. The new partnership between AGL and Chargefox aligns with a broader industry move toward interoperability, consolidating networks into single, user-friendly platforms that make EV ownership more seamless.

Sydney currently leads the nation in kerbside charging infrastructure, and AGL’s rollout represents one of the largest street-side deployments in Australia. Making these chargers accessible through Chargefox strengthens Sydney’s position as one of the country’s most EV-friendly cities. It also benefits regional drivers visiting Sydney, who can now use AGL’s chargers through their existing Chargefox accounts without setting up new logins.

From a practical standpoint, this integration addresses a real gap for drivers without access to home charging. Kerbside chargers, offering 7kW to 22kW speeds, are designed for extended parking, ideal for residents and commuters rather than road-trippers seeking fast top-ups. The moderate speeds help balance convenience with lower strain on local power networks.

The key challenge ahead will be maintaining reliability and access. Since kerbside chargers share space with regular parking, ensuring they’re available and functional will determine their success. Still, this partnership marks a strong step forward. Simplifying access and unifying charging platforms makes EV ownership more practical, especially for urban dwellers without garages—an essential move for broader adoption across Australia.
