In April 2023 the Federal Government and NRMA joined forces to establish a nationwide network of electric vehicle fast charging stations, with a particular emphasis on connecting rural areas.

This $78.6 million collaborative effort aims to install 117 rapid charging points along major highways, ensuring that regional Australia keeps pace with the growing adoption of electric vehicles.

This initiative will provide essential infrastructure and create a network of fast-chargers linking rural communities. It will also offer peace of mind to local electric vehicle owners and tourists alike.

As Australia's largest member-owned organization, the NRMA is ideally suited to spearhead this infrastructure project. The company's business model allows for long-term investments that yield broad community benefits.

To their credit the NRMA electric vehicle fast charging network offered many years of free usage to all EV users, since their first fast charger was initially launched in 2017.

The NRMA's primary focus was on expanding the network's coverage, aiming to boost early adaptor EV driver confidence and familiarize users with the charging process before introducing any fees.

The NRMA started charging for the use of it’s formerly free electric car DC fast charging network after September 2023.

Free charging sounds great but it often resulted in those who were unaware of EV charger etiquette (or simply selfish) leaving their car at NRMA fast chargers for much longer than necessary, sometimes hours.

Initial pricing for NRMA fast chargers was :

Pricing from 27th September 2023$/kWh
Chargers capable of up to 150kW0.54
Chargers capable of above 175kW0.59

Since then the price has increased once already.

Now from 1 August 2024, NRMA is changing the price of each fast charging session again as detailed below.

NRMA members will continue to get a 10% discount on every charge.

Pricing from 1st August 2024$/kWh
Chargers capable of up to 150kW0.60 increases to 0.66
Chargers capable of above 175kW0.65 increases to 0.71

Mentioning discounts, this 10% deal is only available if you use an NRMA charger through the MyNRMA app.

If you use a blue NRMA branded charger via the Chargefox app then you will be charged the non member price.
