AGL Energy is rapidly expanding its footprint in Australia's electric vehicle market, with its EV-focused retail plans outpacing the country's overall growth in EV adoption. The energy retailer now has 26,000 EV Energy plan customers, with nearly 40% being new AGL customers at sign-up.
The surge in EV adoption has also contributed to an overall increase in electricity demand—something AGL noted this week as a key factor behind its first recorded growth in native demand in six years.

Shifting to Off-Peak Charging
AGL's EV Night Saver Plan, which offers 8c/kWh charging from midnight to 6 am, has significantly altered consumption patterns. According to AGL, up to 44% of customers' daily energy use is now shifted to the overnight window, helping drivers save on energy costs while allowing AGL to optimise its generation assets.
"This presents a major opportunity to manage the growing flexible load of EV batteries by encouraging off-peak charging," said AGL CEO Damien Nicks. "Our EV Night Saver Plan has shown that EV customers use up to four times more electricity overnight compared to standard residential customers."

Expanding EV Programs and Partnerships
AGL has also broadened its EVControl program, offered through its joint venture partner OVO Energy, to include BMW, Mini, and Tesla customers. This program not only offers 8c/kWh charging overnight but also introduces a 0c/kWh daytime window from 11 am to 2 pm, capitalising on excess solar generation during midday hours.

Beyond home charging, AGL is expanding into public infrastructure. Its new kerbside EV charging initiative, launched in partnership with Plus ES, recorded 1,750 charging sessions in its first month—helped by a free charging period that ran until the end of January.
The company has also acquired Everty Chargepoint Management System to strengthen its EV charging network and expanded its BP partnership to scale its charging solutions beyond traditional fuel stations.

Vehicle-to-Grid on the Horizon
While AGL has yet to unveil major vehicle-to-grid (V2G) plans, the company confirmed it is "progressing towards V2G readiness" as part of its broader EV strategy.

Looking ahead, AGL sees EV charging accounting for 4% of total electricity demand by 2030, reinforcing its focus on tailored energy plans, smart charging solutions, and growing infrastructure.
"EVs are a rapidly evolving market, and we are well-positioned to meet customer needs, drive innovation, and expand our offerings in this space," Nicks said.
