The Jaecoo J5 EV is here. This small electric SUV costs $35,888 before on-road costs. The first 1000 buyers get drive-away pricing at $36,990. That makes it one of the cheapest electric SUVs in Australia when it arrives next month.
The J5 EV shares its platform with the Chery E5. It competes with the Leapmotor B10, BYD Atto 2, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Zeekr X, and MG S5 EV. All of those cost more than the Jaecoo. But the BYD Atto 2 still holds the title of cheapest electric SUV at $31,990 before on-road costs.

Battery and Charging
The J5 EV uses a single electric motor on the front axle. It makes 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque. That's the same power as the Chery E5, but less torque. The E5 produces 340Nm.
A 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery provides the energy. Omoda Jaecoo claims 402km of range on the WLTP cycle. Energy use sits at 14.3kWh per 100km. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 7.7 seconds.
Charging from 30 to 80 percent on a DC fast charger takes 28 minutes. The car can handle up to 130kW DC charging and 10.3kW AC charging.

Inside the Cabin
Jaecoo calls the J5 EV pet and child friendly. The interior uses synthetic leather with a durable silicone coating. This material resists scratches and cleans easily.
The driver gets a 13.2-inch touchscreen and an 8.9-inch digital instrument cluster. An 8-speaker sound system comes standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect your phone. A 50W wireless charging pad keeps devices topped up.
Both front seats have 6-way power adjustment. They also heat and ventilate. Dual-zone climate control manages the temperature. Multi-colour ambient lighting sets the mood.
The glass roof includes a powered sunshade. Voice commands control various functions. USB-A and USB-C outlets provide charging options. The car even offers vehicle-to-load functionality to power external devices.

Warranty and Service
An 8-year unlimited-kilometre warranty covers the vehicle and high-voltage battery. Service intervals are every 12 months or 20,000km, whichever comes first.
Capped-price servicing for 8 years costs $1,520 total. That works out to $190 per service. Free roadside assistance lasts up to 8 years if you service at Jaecoo dealers.
More Variants Coming
The J5 range will expand in 2026. Jaecoo plans to add turbo-petrol and hybrid variants. Both will cost less than the electric version.
