Key Points
- XC40 electric SUV updated with more range
- Single-motor goes RWD, dual-motor gets larger battery
- Priced from $76,990, rivals Model Y, Ioniq 5, EQB
The Volvo XC40 Recharge electric SUV has been given another minor update, with range and efficiency improvements to keep it competitive with the popular Tesla Model Y.
The single-motor variant has now switched to rear-wheel drive, whereas the dual-motor gains a bigger battery with faster charging capabilities.
The improvements come with price rises – $3000 for the single-motor and $4500 for the dual-motor.
The XC40 Recharge now costs from $76,990 to $85,990 before on-road costs and provides between 460km to 500km of claimed WLTP driving range depending on the variant.
The luxury electric SUV is eligible for select Australian electric car incentives, excluding the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for company fleets and novated leases.
The Volvo XC40 EV rivals models such as the sleeker related C40 Recharge, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mercedes-Benz EQB, and BMW iX1 electric cars.
XC40 Recharge Key Specs: Range, Charging and Size

Meanwhile, the updated dual-motor gains a larger 79kWh usable battery (up 4kWh), longer claimed driving range of up to 500km (up 62km), faster 200kW DC charging capability (previously 150kW), and a new in-house developed permanent magnet rear motor paired with an asynchronous front motor producing the same outputs, albeit with a tweaked torque split.
